About the Author
Andrew W. Appel is the Eugene Higgins Professor and Chairman of the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University, New Jersey, where he has been on the faculty since 1986. His research is in software verification, computer security, programming languages and compilers, automated theorem proving, and technology policy. He is known for his work on Standard ML of New Jersey and on Foundational Proof-Carrying Code. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, recipient of the ACM SIGPLAN Distinguished Service Award, and has served as Editor in Chief of ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems. His previous books include Compiling with Continuations (1992), the Modern Compiler Implementation series (1998 and 2002) and Alan Turing's Systems of Logic (2012).

Appel spends far too much time wrestling with C over ...

Appel spends far too much time wrestling with C over actually explaining compilers. After talking to others, it appears the ML version of this book is the way to go, and the Java version suffers the same problems as the C version.

Excellent theory book

This is a very good book on modern compilers. It covers some crucial tochniques that the Dragon Book does not, such as pipelining, handling superscalar and RISC processors, tail recursion, polymorphism and OO languages, etc. These things were unknown when the Dragon Book was written. Its treatment of compiler basics is not as good as that in the Dragon Book, but the additional material makes it about as valuable. NOTE: This is a theory book, not a cookbook. You are not buying code, you are buying a reference you can use when writing code. You will still have to do your own thinking and your own coding.

The Project kills this book

The book is fairly good. Covers the compiler theory pretty well, and includes a good coverage of advanced topics at the end. I gave it a low rating because the project really kills this book. The first 12 chapters are a walk-through gide for building a compiler for the tiger language (which the author defined). The tiger language itself is weird at first since it doesn't have any statements. It only has expressions. Besides, the language is not thoroughly documented in the book and leaves a lot of things open for the implementor. At any rate, after building the first few chapters (about the time you've done the parse tree) the book starts to get confusing, dedicating more and more space to describe the bits and pieces of the project (which I read somewhere was ported to C from ML). All in all it's a good reference book, but it's really confusing if this is your primary text. I'd recommend it as a secondary textbook. And I wouldn't recommend tiger for a compiler project, better use decaf (search google).

Meddling Kids...

The gang in the Mystery Machine go on a trip to visit Daphne's uncle, the police chief of Castle Rock. When they get there they learn of a jewel thief who has recently stolen a lot of jewels. So of course they decide to investigate. Wanting to start fresh in the morning they head to the only place in town to spend the night, the Castle Hotel. A creepy looking old castle up on a cliff overlooking the town. I won't spoil the story, but I will say they don't get much sleep that night.

I bought the three ebooks in this set to have in my Kindle library for someone under twelve to read. And since I have them I decided to read them first myself. Back in the day when Scooby-Doo first came on television it was one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons. Mainly I think because it was a mystery series. So I figure I would check these stories out to see if they were as good as the television episodes. I have to say this first mystery is great. I could easy imagine it as a script for one of the TV shows. The pacing was fast, and the action matched that of pretty much every Scooby-Doo episode I've ever seen. I'd recommend this book to a young person interested in a good mystery.

The ebook is 61 pages long - with real page numbers. There are nine chapters. At the beginning of each chapter there is an illustration, and a few more scattered through-out the book. I read the book on my Kindle Keyboard so the images looked B/W to me. I later check them on my HP TouchPad and they are indeed B/W images, the cover art work is color.

Scooby-Doo Meets a Vampire

Scooby and the Mystery Inc. gang travel to Castle Rock to visit Daphne's uncle, police chief Brad Bestler. But when they arrive, they find themselves in the middle of another mystery! Local jewel thefts have been attributed to a mysterious cloaked figure with eerily white skin, spawning rumors of vampires. The gang stays in the Castle Hotel, run by Dr. Franklin and his assistant, Ivan, both of whom behave strangely. Soon the teens and Scooby-Doo experience frightening antics and end up trying to solve the mystery of not only the jewel thefts but also the happenings at the hotel. Are they linked, and is the explanation rational or supernatural?

This short children's chapter book evokes the spirit of the original "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" television show. The story is sufficiently spooky for young readers but not terrifying, and the characters remain true to their original televised counterparts, down to Shaggy's overuse of the interjection "like" and Scooby's distinctive speech ("Ruh-roh!"), which makes this series enjoyable and easy to follow. Also, the romantic aspect that has been recently introduced into modern remakes of the series is refreshingly lacking here. There are many black-and-white illustrations that enhance the reader's imagination, and the chapters are short. Some readers may need help with certain words or phrases, but overall this is a delightful book for Scooby fans and for mystery lovers.

I got this to read to my three and five year old kids before bed. They LOVE Scooby doo and this is so much better then the little books we usually read to them. One chapter a night and it leaves them hanging for more. I really can't wait for more of these to come out. Its great for boys and girls... and us as parents too.

Brilliant book worth more than you'll ever pay

This book is an absolutely brilliant work. The 19 principles are worth your knowing--and worth ANY price that you pay for the book.

The only point made in the book that I disagree with is this: the use of slashes. In terms of the book itself, it is decidedly NOT convention to use a slash to indicate a time period, as in "1998/99." Instead, the conventional mark for such a period is a hyphen or an n-dash, as in "1998-99." Likewise, it should be the "Baltimore-Washington Parkway" and "work-life balance," not "Baltimore/Washington Parkway" and "work/life balance." The slash used in the last two examples can be misinterpreted to mean one, the other, or both. Sometimes the use of the slash in such constructions indicates a series of coordinate adjectives that should be punctuated with commas. In other words, the use of the slash in such constructions is not clear.

And if you don't understand the expression "a series of coordinate adjectives," you need to read the book. Pay close attention to the discussion about the normal order of adjectives in English, as in "little old lady" (a coordinate adjective series that requires no comma).

Another questionable observation is this: There has a been a debate about the serial comma (as in "a, b, and c," not "a, b and c") for DECADES. The more accurate observation is that there has been a debate about this issue for more than a CENTURY.

Anyone who would like to have a good model for how to write should read this book and emulate its style--if that is possible and even if he or she is not interested in its subject. ("Emulate" means to copy OR surpass.)

Most impressive, the book is really quite humorous--and therefore interesting to read. Richard Lauchman continues the enlightening work of William Sabin in "The Greg Reference Manual" and deserves kudos for his outstanding efforts.

"I intend to show you, explaining as necessary along the way, not only how to use the marks correctly, but how to choose the marks that best clarify your intention and best suggest how much emphasis you want to place on an idea," Richard Lauchman states in his introduction of his book, "Punctuation at Work - Simple Principles for Achieving Clarity and Good Style."

At two hundred and eight pages, this paperback book is targeted toward individuals who care about conveying proper punctuation in their writing at the workplace. After an introduction, author's note, and definitions, the first section of the book has sixty pages of nineteen principles of punctuation, followed by over ninety pages of rules for thirteen punctuation marks in alphabetical order. Also included are an appendix on listing ideas, chapter-by-chapter notes, and a topical index.

Lauchman reminds us the two sentences, "She is dressed to kill Richard" and "She is dressed to kill, Richard," have two very different meanings, based solely by one comma mark. By learning standard punctuation rules that clarify intent, are arranged correctly, delineate ideas, accentuate emphasis, and make common sense, we can perfect writing skills at work and in our daily lives.

In each topic listed, the author has both wrong and right examples, showing a better way to design a sentence or thought. Some errors are humorous while others show more problematic structure or intent and how to correct them.

The more useable section is on the marks, as a quick reference when or when not to use them. A supporter of the serial comma, Lauchman feels it confirms what the writer's intent is without question. He explains when to use a comma or the word "and" with multiple adjectives as well as reiterates use of the dash and slash. The ellipsis, a much-misunderstood mark, should only be used for omitting words and include four dots if at the end of a sentence.

Although it is recommended to use indentation for long quoted sections, the section on double quotes does not include two or more paragraphs of conversation by the same person where the ending quote per paragraph is omitted until the final paragraph or what to do if there is a break in the dialogue within the middle paragraph.

With more workers succumbing to texting, emailing, and using abbreviations, the art of proper writing with good punctuation is still necessary to communicate clearly. This is a great tool to have at a hand's reach at the work station and this reader hopes there is a similar book on grammar rules forthcoming.

It is the first book of its kind to focus on the whole of European Romanticism, moving between the national literatures of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia and Spain on the one hand, and common themes, subjects, forms, and sources on the other. Subjects addressed range from orientalism, capitalism, and nature, to the revival of the lyric and the influence of the French Revolution. The volume also includes cross-disciplinary contributions on literature and music, literature and painting, and the general system of Romantic arts. There are over 30 essays in all, written by leading Romanticism scholars from America, Australia, Britain, France, Italy, and Switzerland.

Good introduction to Romanticism

The great benefit of this book is the multi-visoned orientation. The articles are collected from diverse authors in such a way that, read as a whole it yields many good insights into the movement that swept Europe at the beginning of the 18th century. There are alos articles devoted to aesthetics across europe. Unfortunately it is limited to mainly England, Germany, France, and Italy. While these are arguabely the moswt important Romantic countries, there are only brief articles on Spain, Poland and Russia. There is no study of Scandinavia or Hungary.
