About the Author

Ronald J. Maughan is Professor of Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Loughborough University, a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and Chairman of the Sports Nutrition Working Group of the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee. In addition to his academic work and appointments he has worked with many teams and organizations in football (soccer) and other sports. Dr Maughan is has authored or edited several books on sports nutrition and exercise science. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Sports Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism, and serves or has served in editorial roles on several other sports science journals. He has published extensively on subjects in sports nutrition and sports science.

Timely publication

This book is a timely publication give the explosion in sports supplementation that has now filtered down to the regular athlete. It goes a long way to debunking a number of commercial myths and is reasonably balanced. Some chapters are extremely well written, but as each chapter has a different author, there is variability in the quality of information. Where it falls down is in it's critical appraisal of the quality of research. Some chapters take poorly researched information and present it as fact. Although the book continually notes good research is lacking in the area of sports nutrition, some chapters still uphold long held sacred cows. For example there are 4 references citing whey protein to be more effective than soy at increasing muscle bulk. When I traced back the references, 3 of the 4 were published by the same Canadian University. The 1st study only had 36 subjects and the controls were extremely poor. There was a 5kg difference in body weight between the groups at the start of the study, the soy group receiving a higher caloric load before entry to the study, thereafter the caloric load declined throughout the study. By contrast the whey group had a lower caloric intake prior to the study, were 5kg lighter and the caloric intake increased progressively through the study until it exceeded the soy group significantly. The sponsors of the study included the Canadian Dairy Farmers and the Canadian Milk Industry. The 2nd study was published by the same University with only 12 participants, the 3rd again by the same University with only 6 participants. I gave up by then & didn't look at the 4th study as I knew what it was likely to show. Despite this and the fact that the amino acid content of whey and soy are very similar, the book continues to repeat the mantra. I think anyone who is interested in sports nutrition from competitor to dietician should read this publication, but do your own cross referencing, do not take it as gospel.

On Time and In-Depth

I got these Encyclopedias for my fianc� who is a huge star wars nerd. He absolutely loved the detail in them and we had a wonderful time reading them together. I would only recommend this for people who are interested in the old cannon (before Disney wiped everything past Episode 6 clean). It is a really useful tool if you want to write a novel about Star Wars or do a star wars based D&D roleplaying game. It arrived on time and in wonderful condition.

I was a bit disappointed by the collection

I was a bit disappointed by the collection, inasmuch as I had a really good look at the first one that came out a while back. There was beaucoup information and a shi... pload of facts, but where the Hey were all the illustrations. That was what made the early version so very likable. Now, I'm not dyslexic nor am I illiterate, but having those drawings made the text that much more understandable. The section about Jabba the Hutt's hangout was very neatly put together in the old book. This one? Meh! If all you want are facts (Just the facts, ma'am!) then this series of books is for you. I'm not saying I wasted money on this set. Far from it, to be sure. It's just that I miss all those lovely helpful illustrations that the first edition. That being said, it's really not all that bad, and it is quite informative. Am I sorry I got it? Hell, no! I guess if it had all the illustrations I'd have liked it to have, instead of three books we might be talking six to eight books. As I said, it ain't all that bad!

Rather Up To Date though a few gripes

Just got this today First opinion is that it's nearly on par with the previous edition. The book covers All 6 movies gives a general overview of the Clone Wars. Then goes up to the last Legacy book Revelation along with a general overview of the Legacy era happening in the Dark Horse Comics that's still ongoing.

At 1200+ pages the information is amazing though some of the pictures they included are recycled images from the previous edition of the Encyclopedia. My main gripe is the fact they'll give a entry but unlike the last edition there are no refrences in the Enclyclopedia tracing back to the orginal source like the previous version did.

Other than that very impressed at the price from Amazon and compared to what we paid for the orginal the book was well worth it and a great addition to the refrence people who want a physical book to go back to. Otherwise I'd refrence to the online encyclopedia that theforce.net hosts.

This being an add on to my review now that I've had the opportunity to give the books a solid look through. All the above I hold to. Though this refrence runs into the same issue that you'd expect from a series that is ever expanding. A few of the entries seemed to go on and just abrubtly hit the brakes and end right there while other entries don't go into enough detail. The most notable locations of history and character development that are glossed over that I wish would have got more of an explanation are the Legacy (Dark Horse Comics current ongoing series based 130 aby) and the Force Unleashed storyline.

The Force Unleashed seemed to be lacking the most. Character acomplishments of Galen (The Apprentice) seemed to have been thrown in just so the authors could say they covered all up to date Star Wars info. The history behind PROXY, Galen, and Juno seemed to be very lacking. The largest missing peice would be these character's parts in forming the Rebel Alliance. While it's mentioned breifly here and there no details are really explored. Galen's family crest being the symbol of the Rebel Alliance for example. Mentioned in a short sentence in an odd ball refrence but nothing about Galen's part in the history ofthe Rebel Alliance.

But still overall I have to say I like this. The books are worthy of the rating I gave of 4 stars. My gripes are probably little details but I guess you can say I have a deep love for Star Wars.

The book does have alot of odd entries little items you'd not think of and if you know someone that loves the Star Wars Expanded Universe this is worth picking up.

It's just not finished.

The book is easy to read. Has some good information. However:

Nothing that hasn't been seen on the internet, or other books.

He claims to have clients yet doesn't list any credentials. Offensively he makes some pretty broad generalization as to why women stay in bad situations. Victims stay in bad situations for a multitude of reason. The author say it is because there is something wrong with the victim. Blaming the victim doesn't fly with me.

The author does not go deep enough in explaining the under tied of the personality of the each man. For example some men who are leaches not only get into your life and home but are impossible to get out of your life and home. They make it very clear you are not safe. These people have no boundaries! They will use and psychologically abuse their own children to keep you trapped and abused.

The book has good bones. I would just like the author finish the job he started.

Absolutely THE BEST book I've read on relationships, men, and dating ...and I've read alot!

This was a really GREAT read. Very informative and straight forward. I loved EVERYTHING about this book! I loved the brutal honesty. This book provides awareness and knowledge on the many issues many women have problems in (men and relationships). I have learned how to identify red flags and warning signs but more importantly to look within when it comes to my own dating patterns. It can be challenging to change our mindsets and start doing things differently but necessary if we want to be treated the way we deserve.

I do not like books with contents that do not go with my ...

Single women especially must read this book. I mean read all of it. As a Christian, I choose what books to read and which ones not to read. I do not like books with contents that do not go with my belief as a Christian. When I read the bible, I realize how many things were going on in bible days, and some of them we have not even heard of.
Nevertheless, I will have to ask God to forgive me after I finish with this one. I do not like some of the languages, but I must admit that this is a good book for me. I am reading it and I am still a Christian. It is what it is about “life” on a whole.
Thank you, Author Colin Tate “IS THIS THE MAN.” I just have to ignore the languages, though.
I spoke with Author Tate not long ago via Facebook. I asked him a few questions, and he told me to read the book. Well, everything I asked him is in the book.
Besides, the bible, of course, this is one of the best books ever written, I read it and if you can ignore the language, of course, you will learn something. WOW. What an awesome writer you are.
I have to pause after each chapter to take a breath and absorb what I just read so I can get ready for the next chapter. It is very direct. It got me so engaged and obsessed, I do not know what to do with myself.
I do not want the book to get done. Many times ladies including me ask men questions, but this is the perfect chance to learn for yourself some things that you may never know anywhere else. Have a good read. I am already worried about the some of the characters in the book and what may have happened to them now.

Un estilo muy particular de escribir

Me gust� su forma de escribir-profunda pero concreta. Dice mucho en pocas p�ginas y cada historia se queda grabada en la mente. No es un libro que se puede leer de golpe, sino que cada historia tiene que pensarse por separado y darse tiempo a "digerirla". Es el primer libro que leo de Alice Munro y me impact�. Abarca temas oscuros de la mente y otras dimensiones del pensamiento. No le doy m�s estrellas al libro porque pienso que los finales de las historias son abruptos, cortantes y a veces inentendibles.

Sere justa y empecere diciendo que de no ser por el Premio Nobel de Literatura jamas hubiera leido a Munro; Demasiada Felicidad ha sido mi introduccion a esta escritora, la verdad no me ha impresionado como esperaba sobre todo por el galardon pero en fin, es una literatura de facil digestion, simple y al mismo tiempo un tanto interesante, muy recomendable para aquellos que aman las historias cortas. Mi historia favorita sin duda, es la ultima, Sofia Kovalevski, es uno de mis personajes favoritos.

This is a lovely book that tells about a portion of our early history. It is a must for anyone interested in the struggles, hardships and hazards faced by the early settlers and their survivors. Author Lisle reveals some new details regarding the sale of land to the Proprieters by the Sakonnet Indians and the part the Sakonnets played in the devestating King Phillip's War. Well done!
