Anne Tyler walzing with Pushkin... a surprise, a delight

This book is one of a nearly extinct breed: a novel in verse. In that form lie its unique pleasures as well as its uncertain reception at some hands.
The poet James Merrill, in his epic trilogy "The Changing Light at Sandover" has claimed that "forms what affirms". Does this mean that the satisfaction of the novel can only come if the line-breaks are reliably marginal? Linguists Whorf and Sapir have suggested that language constrains our thought - not so much in the realm of vocabulary as, again, in that of form. The radically different forms of, for instance, Hopi or Inuit constrain "what is relatively easy to say" and hence, what is said. Perhaps so. You'd expect that rhyming sonnets would constrain the voice of a novelist, but Vikram Seth has certainly shown here that is not necessarily the case. Chalk it up to a mastery of both form and story, though, not to versification. His technical skills extend to both realms.
Moving, then, beyond form, we wonder about content of such a novel. Will the book wander (or waltz) into the deeply allegorical, the disconnected, the imagistic? After all, aren't those the consequences of poetic license? Have you read your Ashbery? Oddly, this poem is quite prosaic in that regard, it tells a tight, comprehensible story in a manner that is fluid but not embroidered. (By way of contrast, consider that you can easily find yourself spinning away in a vortex of magical metaphor in the latest Rushdie.) Novels, it would seem, are pretty much what we make of them. As one who has never really appreciated the modernist redesign of the novel, I found "The Golden Gate" to be a much more satisfying story - notwithstanding its several-hundred sonnets.
The book is a well-textured story about a number of folks living their lives and relationships - apparently in the 80's. (Some reviewers have made much of the story's use of timestamped phraseology such as the use of "yuppie" and the like. Perhaps. But I'd imagine that the term "Okie" was equally a well-understood, sometimes overloaded, term of the 30's which we, nevertheless, can comfortably accept from Steinbeck.) The lives, loves and trials of these folks are presented with the careful painting and pacing of Anne Tyler and J. R. Lennon.
Seth's verse in this book has been called "masterful". It is, indeed. Consider that the odd rhyme is hardly ever at hand for most of us, much less available when called upon, as he was, thousands of times. But Seth is more than a rhymer - something I noticed by contrast. I'm pretty sure the sonnet scheme he uses is the so-called "Pushkin rhyme." I only know this since I just struggled through a marginal translation of "Eugene Onegin" and noticed the similarity. But the sing-songy'ness of the Pushkin was gladly lacking in the Seth. He uses true poetic craft, line breaks and punctuation and word choice, to allow the reader to flow between a fluid, songlike verse and a more prosaic tale-telling. In other words, he uses the strengths of both forms when they serve, best, the needs of the work and the reader.
So. Don't be afraid of the form. But also don't expect it to seem natural unless you have seen it before. I came to this book via a recommendation of Tom Disch in his essays in "The Castle of Indolence" (a 5-star plug there), and from a background in having sought out and read quite a number of long poems, epic poems and verse novels.
If you taste this book more out of curiosity than experience, good for you! But grant yourself the time to bounce through the first dozen sonnets in the singy-songy phrasing that so many of us learned to be necessarily poetic many years ago. Then, as the story captures you, you will notice that the verse, with the help of Seth's subtle crafting, both lifts and disappears beneath the story. I'll read it again, and again.

About the Author
David Stahel is the author of four previous books on Nazi Germany's war against the Soviet Union. He completed an MA in War Studies at King's College London (2000) and a PhD at the Humboldt University in Berlin (2007). His research focus has concentrated primarily on the German military in World War II. He is a lecturer in European history at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Dr Stahel is currently working on a follow-up book to The Battle for Moscow, looking at the German retreat in the winter of 1941-2.

Interesting, but...

Readers of Stahel's other books will know what to expect in this volume... This book is less an account of the military campaign itself (it does not go into much detail about the actual fighting, movement of various units, etc.) than an examination of certain aspects of the campaign which are of primary interest to the author, namely:
1) the deplorable condition of German forces as they reached the gates of Moscow;
2) the general incompetence of the German generals and military leadership; and
3) the complicity of the average German soldier in the atrocities committed by the Germans in Russia.

If you're not interested in the three topics described above, I don't recommend that you read this book. The great strength of this book are the extensive excerpts from private German letters and diaries cited by the author--from private soldiers up to the top generals. These excerpts are generally rather interesting and well-chosen, and the author does a good job of using them to support his arguments (although see below). Unfortunately, as in his previous books, the author focuses almost exclusively on German sources.

I should also note that the rather extensive parts of the book dealing with atrocities make for grim reading--this is not a light read.

A couple of things I didn't like about this book:
1) In general, the book is rather "ideological" and the author comes across less as a dispassionate historian than someone with an axe to grind. By this I mean that the author cites an impressive (and to this reader convincing) set of sources to support his arguments, but I found that his commentary often drips with disdain for the Germans--I'd have appreciated a more neutral tone...
2) As mentioned above, it is actually rather difficult to follow the military campaign in this book; the author doesn't mention very many specific locations or Soviet units/commanders, so its difficult to track the action (almost all references to the action are tied to German units, ie the "left flank of the 4th Army", etc.) In the author's defense, a battlefield account is obviously not the author's main focus, and he includes 18 maps of the battle which would help with this, but they are unreadable on a kindle... In my view, however, the book would have been even better if it were easier to place the author's arguments within the context of on-going military operations.
3) Maybe its my imagination, but the author seems to quote less from various logistics records in this book than in his previous books, and relies almost exclusively on excerpts from personal German letters/diaries, and to a lesser extent, official German unit diaries, etc. While this makes the book more interesting to read, it left me wondering whether a different author could have chosen different letters/diaries, or even different lines from the same letters, to make entirely different arguments...

Another Must Read from Stahel!

I have read all of Stahel’s books on the eastern front (as well as many other) and I these are, without doubt, the best books on the German offensive in the east in 1941. Beyond the battle narrative, what Stahel offers is much needed context for the battle (administrative, economic and ideological). The recent book by Zetterling and Frankson (The Drive on Moscow) is a rehash of many older accounts repeating some of the myths Stahel directly addresses and debunks. Consider also Andrew Nagorski’s 2007 book The Greatest Battle, Robert Forczyk’s Moscow 1941 and the older book by Albert Seaton The Battle for Moscow - all of these cast the battle as an essentially close-run encounter where the Soviets snatch their victory from the jaws of defeat. Stahel shows this was simply not the case. That German operations against Moscow in November 1941 were madness, devoid of any strategic sense. The crisis in German supply, men and material raises the question why the German high command proceeded with the offensive at all and here Stahel provides an answer – it’s what he calls National Socialist military thinking. The explanation of this is itself a whole new take on German operations in WWII and alone worth the price of the book.

a must-have for those interested in this period

I am writing this with my audience primarily intended to be Mr. Stahel himself. Mr. Stahel, I wish to express my thanks for this excellent series of books. I have now read all four and found them to be fascinating, well-written, and most of all very informative. Having read a good deal of WW2 military history, I still believed many of the myths that you systematically destroyed through these books, all the way up to believing that some German units had seen the Kremlin glimmering in the distance. I am now glad to see much more clearly the reality of the situation in this war. The statistic that keeps jumping out at me (from the first book), was that the Germans ran out of truck tires just 6 weeks into the war -- that really illustrates up the intractable logistical/production bind they were in if the war didn't end in the first two months. And that bind grew increasingly tight as the war continued through 1941, through the end of this book. Panzer divisions with as few as 7 tanks trying to take Moscow, with massive Russian reserves and defense in depth before they even reached the well-prepared city? I now see clearly it was never going to happen. Greatly looking forward to whatever you publish next!

Game On!!

I have always fancied a good erotica novel, and this book by far beats out all competition!! I don't think I will ever look at the men in blue quite the same again!

The mix of story, and hot, steamy sex was so perfectly blended, I not only got lost within its pages, but felt the need for a cold shower after its completion. It's not often a book can spark that kind of emotion, thus making Assume The Position one of the best books of 2011!!!

Excellent, fast paced story...and did I mention Hot!

I'd like to preface this review by saying that I rarely rate a novella above a 3 star. It is really just a matter of opinion, but novellas often feel rushed to me. Lacking in either plot or character development. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised with Assume the Position. It's a quick, enjoyable read. Perfect if you're feeling like something naughty.

I have to say that T.C Lee did an excellent job of character development especially for a short story. I thought it was a unique twist that it was the hero that had some hang-ups about sex, usually it's the heroine. Alex was sexy and dominant, my two favorite traits in a hero. Regan was a good mix of innocent and vixen. She was often shy, but still at times brazen. The chemistry between the two was steamy and the romantic scenes were HOT.

I was impressed by how much detail was packed into the story for a novella. There was an interesting twist that I didn't see coming between Regan and her friends. I enjoyed that aspect of the story. However, I wanted to know more about what happened between Regan and her friend Kate. I needed a bit more closure. For me, that was the only thing missing in this story. Still, considering its length, I got much more than I expected from a novella, which is why I rated it higher than usual. I definitely recommend this story for anyone looking for a fast paced, sexy read.

HOLY HOT BOOKS BATMAN! This books is INTENSE! Def not for the feint of heart 18+...if you are easily offended, do not read any further!

T.C Lee has unleashed a sexual tidal wave titled "Assume the Position". When Alex, the playboy police officer with skeletons in his closet meets shy & withdrawn Regan who does not know herself very well, sparks fly and hand cuffs are the ignitor for a very intense story with an incredible story line and plenty of heat to set a huge fire!

In this fast pace Novella by TC Lee, we enter the world of Regan who has a lonely past, a best friend that never has her own interest at heart and a set up date with a guy Regan feels is creepy. Due to her faithfulness to her best friend Kate, she agrees to go out with the creep friend of Kate's boyfriend, Jeremy. Regan knows deep down there is just something off about this guy but Kate is her best friend.

Running late as usual, Regan sees the blue and reds of a police car and knows she is BUSTED for speeding. She never expects a God of a man to walk up to her. She instantly realizes that this man may have what she has been missing her whole life.

As a historian, Jerry Crandall s main interest is WWII, specifically the air war over Europe. Due to his extensive study and the need for this valuable information to be preserved Crandall has created numerous paintings, prints and has written several books on this topic. In his quest for historical accuracy he has interviewed pilots who have served in WWII, Korea, the cold war and post war seeking invaluable first hand information for his research. Through the years he has amassed a large collection of rare photos of WWII aircraft highlighting extremely rare images of Luftwaffe fighters plus he has collected personal interview tapes with pilots and crew members, actual aircraft parts and other aviation related materials. He worked at McDonnell DouglasAircraft Company as an aviation artist; has been a guest on numerous radio and television talk shows including the NBC Sunday show in LA twice, and the Mike Douglas Televisions shows. He was a guest on the Navy Carrier USS Nimitz gathering knowledge of modern day Naval operations. After poring over Jerry Crandall's superb new book, Focke-Wulf 190 Dora Volume One, a person might be tempted to conclude that it contains more detailed information about this formidable late war German aircraft than every other source that has come before - put together. And if you're interested in what specific aircraft in specific units from specific factories actually looked like, colors and all, and you made such a claim--you'd be absolutely right. Good treatment of subject matter

The book provided an excellent overview of low power design concepts. I would recommend the text for experienced CMOS engineers.

The only negative is the multiple grammar errors, I started to mark them but gave up after a while. Not what I would expect from such an expensive purchase.
