Below average GRE guide

I'm a long-time GRE tutor, and I review GRE books to help self-studiers with their prep. Kaplan's latest version of their GRE prep guide, like its previous versions, is a basic primer for the test, but not what I'd recommend. I think it is inferior to its competition in several important ways.

1. First, this book is a one-size-fits-all book. But kind of like a one-size-fits all hat, it's not going to work as well for people who are below or above average. If you're starting from a high or low point, this may not work well for you: high scorers need more depth; lower scorers need more technique options.

2. Practice question realism is poor, especially for verbal questions. It's so important to practice with questions that capture the nuances and complexities of the real GRE. Kaplan, like most companies, doesn't duplicate these nuances well. In general, these questions are simpler and easier than real questions. So even if this book included access to a million Kaplan computer tests, I would avoid it.

3. The book does not adequately cover all the concepts the GRE will present. I am surprised to see there is still no treatment of logic or "critical reasoning" verbal questions, and that not all math concepts are covered. Again, bad for you if you want a competitive score.

4. The level of depth for math concepts will, in my opinion, not get people to competency in many cases, let alone mastery.

5. The techniques offered for math are fine, but verbal techniques are fairly fluffy - they may work on Kaplan-written questions, but I don't think for many they'll work well on more difficult ETS GRE questions.

The thing that gets me worked up about this book is not that it's mediocre. It's that it's marketed as the best, most comprehensive GRE prep option. I guess it sells more books to say your book is an easy one-stop solution than to tell people that you may need multiple books and that hard work is required. Also, Kaplan books have a funny way of garnering tons of 5-star "reviews", and as a result, millions of people buy them. Whatever prep materials you choose, I suggest researching them in detail.

Great Value for Money

I have GRE score of 323 and I am one of the founding members of the GRE Prep Club online community. Here is what I think about this book:
~~~ PROS~~~
1. Great Value for Money: The combined package, i.e. the book + CD + Online Materials, form a very exhaustive library of GRE Questions created and Compiled by Kaplan.
2. Its greatest merit lies in its Chapters on AWA Sections. The topics and responses are discussed in great detail. There is an immaculate Foundation and Content review chapter under the AWA section as well, which is probably the best feature of this product. It also discusses the pacing strategy (writing the essay within 30 min) and nuances of Scoring.
3. The Foundation and Content Review Chapters under both, Quant and Verbal sections are very detailed and beginner friendly. The theoretical coverage on the topics is fairly detailed.
4. The answers to the practice questions, in the book, are very detailed and insightful.
5. Practice test are of paramount importance for test prep. The six tests equip the user to perform SWOT analysis and monitor progress from time to time. The test analysis report is a lifesaver!

~~~ CONS ~~~
1. Difficulty level of questions, specifically in the Quantitative section, could have been better. The practice test set questions are not at par with the Questions by ETS.
2. The section named: “Kaplan Method of Problem solving” has a much better alternative that can be found in the book by ETS. Since ETS books contain actual GRE questions hence it is much more effective to emulate problem solving strategies presented in the Book by ETS.
3. The questions on the Tests by Kaplan seem to lack the quality that we have come to Expect from ETS and Manhattan.
Overall it is a well-balanced book and good value for money. However, it is not sufficient by itself, if the user wants to score more than 315 points. If you are looking to score higher on the GRE you must consider other books. It is highly advisable that you look into ETS GRE as they have actual GRE Questions.

~ What are some of the other study options that I have?
Some students, in the past, have bypassed Kaplan completely and started more specialized books such as the ETS or Manhattan GRE. For example, Manhattan GRE Set of eight strategy guides come with 8 books that target specific math and verbal areas. You would have a much better shot at scoring 315+ using this (not guaranteed), however they require 2-3 months to complete. ETS has a similar collection of 3 books (general + quantitative + verbal). They also have four tests on CD rom enclosed along with the package.

~ What is a good study plan using Kaplan Premier?
Since it is a good book for beginner’s, I would recommend that you could start with Kaplan and finish it within a month, then evaluate which are your areas of strength/ weakness. Based on your analysis you can invest in a book by Manhattan/ ETS to bolster your weaknesses.

~ Will this get me to 315+?
This book alone, probably, won’t get you to 315+ score but for people out of college it would refresh the math and verbal fundamentals. You should seriously consider investing in ETS as they provide you with questions that have appeared in GRE before.

~ How do I get to 315+ with this book?
• You can review your concepts using this book and take a Mock test to perform SWAT analysis.
• Based on your SWAT you can invest in a book that targets your weakness. (see the other books I should know about Section below)
• Retake a Mock test and see the changes in your results.
• If you have a bit more time you can consider investing it in a Book series like the ETS or Manhattan. This will, most likely, take your score to a higher level but it would also cost more in terms of time and money.

Other Books I should know about?
Make sure you have the Official Guides (at least one of them). The Manhattan GRE series are pretty good as well but require a lot more time to go through them.

Makes you enter the exam like you'll be in the 90 percentile but you won't

I have gotten the last 3 versions of the KAPLAN book from a friend to take the exam. In the combined 10 quantitative exams that I had in these books I was getting 18 or 19 out of 20 on every exam. I entered the GRE thinking I was golden & boy was I wrong. The easiest question on the actual math GRE is harder than the hardest question in any of those GRE books. The Kaplan book sounds great but if you use this you will not be leaving the exam so happy because you spent a month taking multiple exams where you are at worst getting 3 wrong out of 20 questions, you get to the exam and it seems like jibberish compared to what KAPLAN had you studying.

A good bird's eye view and an easy read, suitable for basic research on American politics in the 1950s. However, lacks anecdotes and a personal touch. Needs to be overhauled with new material that has recently been made available to the public.

Fantastic read on McCarthyism

The gook is divided into two relatively equal in size parts - the first being an analysis - the second being actual documents (some with only an author selected major parts, though).

Many documents that I've only read about in different books on the Cold War - are present in the second half of the book.

This is a great read that I highly recommend.

Or associated with a member of the Communist Party, or joined a group that has Communist Party members, or signed a petition or even shared a name with a member of the Communist Party? In all the above cases which are by no means exhaustive you could be in danger of coming under the "scrutiny" of Joe McCarthy's Un-American Activities Committee or one of its many off-shoots. Ellen Schrecker's short history of the McCarthy era takes a look at what happened in the McCarthy era starting with a brief 100 page history of the main period stretching from the just after the War to the end of McCarthy himself: he had moved on to attacking the Department of Defence and this rather than his attacks on Trade Unionists, Artists and Political Activists was what brought about his demise.

In addition to the short history of the period, Schrecker has included another 150 pages of primary documents that include the summing up of the Judge at the Rosenberg case; verbatim accounts of testimony at McCarthy's Un-American Activities Committee; Joseph McCarthy's "I have in my hand. . ." speech in which he claims that there are 57 (or 205 or 207 - the number varied in each rendition of the speech) Communists in the State Department; and the Supreme Courts judgments on aspects of McCarthyism including the dissenting judgement. There are also a number of photographs, including a rather ridiculous one of a young Richard Nixon hunched over some micro-film magnifying glass in hand: the micro-film was the so-called "Pumpkin papers" - allegedly secreted in a Pumpkin by Whittaker Chambers one of the Joe McCarthy's star witnesses in the "case" against Alger Hiss.

Whatever the rhetorical flourishes about fighting for freedom that accompanied this witch-hunt, the reality is that it effected tens of thousands of people many of whom were active members of Civil Society in Trade Unions, Education, Film, Television and Journalism. They could be dismissed from their positions, coerced into divulging all political activities and acquaintances over periods running back decades, black listed from employment in sectors that went well beyond those which could plausibly be called vital to "national security" including - at the sublimely ridiculous level - an eight year old girl who was refused clearance to act in a television programme for "Political Reasons"!

The period labelled "McCarthyism" (and McCarthy was the tip of the iceberg, or summit of the dunghill?) functioned as a way of narrowing the limits of Political debate, disrupting Trade Unions who would often find themselves coming under the purview of one or other of the Inquisitorial Committees when involved in industrial disputes, curtailing the political side of civil society and creating a climate of harassment and fear. The motivation of those involved would appear to be a strong dislike of the New Deal State that formed in the 1930's in response to the Great Depression - many of those targeted were those who had been involved in setting up and administering the institutions that were created during that time as well as a variety of other issues including the puerile view of the China Lobby, that it was Communist infiltrators in the State Department and not Chiang Kai-Shek who had "lost" China.

In all its Schrecker has written an excellent introduction to the era, and the additional primary documents make fascinating reading. Amazing results after 2.5 months. Really improved the quality of my life.

Context:
I bought this book, in July, and I have been implementing / following it's principles to the best of my ability ever since.
I come from a Low-Carb/Paleo background, and I used to do strength training, but all of that changed when I found out I had cancer. After I realized that LowCarb/Paleo doesn't make you immune to cancer (as it is sometimes implied by some authorities) and also that I didn't knew enough about cancer, I started researching about different theories/nutritional approaches that I could implement, either therapeutically or after I got better.
Eventually I came across Dr. Raymond Peat's articles, and although they can sometimes be a little cryptic, his ideas seemed very interesting and resonated with me, although I wasn't quite sure how to implement some of them in a more practical way, because he doesn't lay out a simple plan/approach.
This book came exactly at the right time and provided me with a more practical set of principles, based on Dr. Ray's work (and others).

What I did:
- I increased my calorie intake from a maximum of 2500 Kcal (Low-Carb/Paleo), to more than 3000 Kcal a day (50%-60% Carbs), using whole foods, following the principles laid out in the book.
- I stopped strength training (Wendler 5/3/1) because I needed a break and also to start enjoying exercise again, so I started doing isolation/bodybuilding stuff 2 times a week (1 movement for the biceps/triceps/pecs/abs/lats), and 2 days a week I started doing squats/deadlifts (light stuff), pushups/dips and some type of pull up.
- Every training session lasts only 30 minutes, and I NEVER get to the point were I am breathing heavy, the point is to do more total reps/weight/total volume than last time on each exercise.
- I started reintroducing dairy slowly, as I had really strong reactions to it (and some other foods as well, although not as intense), such as abdominal pain/"loose bowels", that would sometimes last for weeks. I started with cheese and then moved on to milk.
- I started going to bed early EVERY day.

Results:
- My body fat went down, to the point I can now see my Abs and a lot of veins throughout my body, which lost it's "fluffy" type look.
- My body weight went from 176 lbs to 163 lbs, although some was lost muscle because I stopped strength training.
- My sleep it's not perfect (it hasn't been for a long time and it's still a work in progress), but it improved significantly in quality, since it's much deeper than before and it's usually full of dreams.
- Temperature (under the tongue) has upped from some cadaveric lows to close to normal levels (36.4 to 37.2 degrees throughout the day) and it's still a work in progress I think.
- I can drink milk again (at least up until 800 mL in a row), without any noticeable adverse reactions, and there is no more sensitivity to any of the foods that previously gave problems as well.
- I think that there was also a redistribution of fat throughout my body (less fat In my face, arms and legs), but I'm not 100% sure, as I don't have a lot of fat anymore.
- My head feels clearer, my ability to think has definitely improved.
- I just feel better overall.

P.s.: This journey hasn't been all rosy, in spite of all of the positive changes that I have described. There were some setbacks along the way, but you will have to push forward (within reason) in order to be successful with this approach, particularly if you have high stress hormones throughout the day, in which case you will feel like crap for a while, because those hormones will go down, so that your thyroid can slowly start taking over, and that might take a while, depending on you particular situation.
Dairy tolerance will start going up also, in time. Keep increasing the amounts progressively, and don't be afraid to cut dairy off, for a day or two, if you start having adverse reactions. Let the body "reset" then start again from where you left off or a lower amount.

Free from dieting!!!

Great information!!! I have been doing what this book suggests and feel so much more content and free with food! I was previously on a no carb and no sugar diet and although at first it is effective with losing weight it ultimately slowed down my metabolism. I now follow what this book suggests and I am at the weight I wanted to be without doing anything extreme or strict. I feel that I healed my thyroid and metabolism and now I eat as much as I feel like. My weight was previously 140 and I am now at 118 lbs. I drink raw milk daily and orange juice daily. I also have gelatin and bone broth several times a week. When I weighed 140 lbs I worked out everyday very hard. Now I hardly work out just because I'm busy with my daughter and I'm maintaining my weight at 118lbs.

A rare gem

Too often we see thin, unsubstantial, unreferenced books in the health and wellness realm. Mostly I suspect due to a lack of any deeper understanding of the subjects therein. This book is a rare gem; surprisingly comprehensive, non-dogmatic, yet reads breezily. It's built on the very strong but very unconventional (and relatively dense) research of Dr. Raymond Peat (and others). Their findings are woven together and disseminated by the author in very practical, actionable ways anyone can apply to themselves. I also appreciate the emphasis given on foods over supplements. Thanks to the author for filling the void :)

I Still Want More....

After the first two books I couldn't wait to pick this up and carry on with a story that I had fallen in love with, this book gives you a more in depth look at the feelings and emotions of the characters. Every time I read a C.C. Cartwright novel I fall more for the style of writing and imagination of a fantastic author who knows how to grip a reader so that you never want to put her books down.

Out of all the four girls it looks like Clarissa is the one who's taking the lead with the task that's been set for them. However even though Clarissa has managed to catch the eye of her professor, he doesn't seem to like all the attention that a guy in his class is giving her. Clarissa wants to enjoy being at college and the experience that it brings her.

Deena joins up to be a song girl and flirts with many guys but has no regrets over it, as she loves the attention that they give her. Then the other two girls are so shy that everyone has to try and convinced them to let go and just enjoy everything, as they have nothing to loose.

Will any of them be able to complete the task. And how will college life treat them. C.C.Cartwright never fails to disappoint any of her readers, her writing is truly amazing and I can never seem to get enough of it. I hope that you can feel the same when reading any of her books.

So ready for the next book

As usual, C.C. Cartwright pulled me into the story from the first page. I love the characters in this book. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. Can't wait to find out which guys still the girls hearts. I love how this series just keeps you on your toes. Every time I think I know what's going to happen and who they are going to fall in love with, C.C. throws someone or something else in there to throw me off.

The best book ever, eye opening, empowering and healing.This book has done great wonder in my husband spiritual life. This is one very special kind of book from a spiritual perspective. This book indeed gives a deep insight and opens ones' eyes to many spiritual things that they may be ignorant about. This book also facilitates special prayers (section by section) to help one break free from curses & evil covenants and to be delivered completely forever. I would highly recommend this book to every Christian and to anyone who sincerely seeks spiritual deliverance and freedom.

Reverend James Solomon is really a great Man of God, who is greatly used by God in many nations around the World. My family and I are privileged to have met with this wonderful Man of God and particularly to be able to attend a couple of his crusades. God Bless him richly and abundantly.
