Nature Wars: The Incredible Story of How Wildlife Comebacks Turned Backyards into Battlegrounds, by Jim Sterba

For four hundred years, explorers, traders, and settlers plundered North American wildlife in an escalating rampage, but in the twentieth century an incredible turnaround took place. Conservationists created wildlife sanctuaries, restored habitats, and imposed regulations on hunters and trappers. Over decades, they nursed many wild populations back to health.

Then, after World War II, something happened that conservationists hadn’t foreseen: sprawl. People moved into suburbs, and then kept moving outward. All the while, well-meaning efforts to protect animals allowed wild populations to burgeon out of control, causing damage costing billions, degrading ecosystems, and touching off disputes that polarized communities. The result is a mix of people and wildlife that should be an animal-lover’s dream, but often turns into a sprawl-dweller’s nightmare.

Deeply researched, eloquently written, and perceptively humorous, Nature Wars expresses the need for organic reconnection with our natural ecosystem by offering a provocative look at how Americans created an inadvertent mess.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Sterba tells the story of, as he puts it, how we turned a wildlife comeback miracle into a mess. The eastern third of the U.S. hosts the majority of Americans and is also the home of a burgeoning population of animals that have adjusted to life near and among humans. This sharing of the landscape has been fueled by three factors: the vast regrowth of forests as farms were abandoned during the Industrial Revolution, the return of decimated and now protected wildlife to the land, and the exurban sprawl created when people moved out of the cities and deeper into the countryside. Dividing his text into three portions, Sterba examines how the clash between suburbanite and animal came about. The first part covers the history of deforestation, farming, reforestation, and the post-WWII movement into the suburbs. The resurgence of wildlife after near-extermination during the settling and taming of the East fills the second portion. Perhaps the most thought-provoking section discusses how Americans have become removed from the realities of wild animals and of working the land, equating nature with bird-feeding and food with the supermarket. This is an excellent introduction to a “problem” that is often one of human perception. --Nancy Bent

Review
"Smart and provocative...Nature Wars is a counterintuitive take on a social problem, and the tone is knowing and smart, not sarcastic or snide." —Chicago Tribune

"[A] sweeping and thoughtful work... there's a lot in Nature Wars for the reasoned and concerned human to learn about the changing natural landscape...[Sterba] paints a vivid and memorable portrait of these new eco systems, where only one, plentiful species is capable of bringing balance and harmony among living things: homo sapiens." —LA Times

"Fascinating...Sterba portrays the resulting conflicts not only between people and animals but also between hunters and activists, government officials and residents, and any number of other factions." —Washington Post

"Written with considerable charm and more wit than commonly found in works that deal with ecosystems, [Nature Wars] includes extensive and often entertaining treatments of such common nuisances as beavers, Canada geese, and feral cats...For the denatured reader, there is a wealth of useful statistics." —New York Review of Books

"While advancing his brief that mankind has to do more to intervene as managers in the natural process, Sterba also ably documents how we influence wildlife without really trying or realizing it." —Christian Science Monitor

"Jim Sterba’s Nature Wars chronicles the dilemmas created by the resurgence of wildlife populations in much of the eastern United States…[A] thoughtful text." —Seattle Times

"[Sterba] makes a provocative, controversial, but quite compelling case that we should not - and cannot - opt out of active management and stewardship of wildlife." —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"
"In Nature Wars, Sterba, an award-winning journalist, examines how modern society is fighting a new war against the wildlife and nature that surround us...an interesting look at how man's attempt to control nature has created even more problems...Thoroughly researched." —Deseret News

"In his book Nature Wars, [Sterba] highlights nature's perils... nature has never been as idyllic as we think." —Emma Bryce, Discover Magazine

"This is an excellent introduction to a “problem” that is often one of human perception." —Booklist, starred review

"Jim Sterba employs humor and an eye for the absurd to document the sometimes bizarre conflicts that arise as a consequence of America's transformed relationship with nature...  An eye-opening take on how romantic sentimentalism about nature can have destructive consequences." —Kirkus, starred review

"Sterba provocatively and persuasively argues that just at the moment when humankind has distanced itself irrevocably from nature, its behavior patterns have put people in conflict with a natural world that they don’t know how to deal with...A valuable counternarrative to the mainstream view of nature-human interaction." —Publisher's Weekly

“In this elegant and compelling tour of America’s mutating connections with its land and wildlife, Jim Sterba uses wit and insight to reveal new and unintended consequences of human sprawl and the ways in which they have shaped today’s relationships with Nature.” —John H Adams , Founding Director , Natural Resources Defense Council

“It's a jungle out there - and we're living in it. Jim Sterba's Nature Wars is a smart, stylish and altogether provocative account of how we are confounded by that which we claim to hold so dear - Mother Nature and all her creatures moving in right next door.” —Tom Brokaw

“Jim Sterba describes a cockeyed country whose denizens spend billions to imitate "nature" in their own small domains, little realizing that their excess creates an environment to which other species are fatefully drawn in increasing, sometimes alarming numbers; that they themselves are the creatures who throw this shared habitat out of whack.  An unusual feat of deep and sustained reporting, Nature Wars is full of surprises and marked, from first page to last, by uncommon sense, graceful writing and precious wit.” —Joseph Lelyveld, author of Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India

“Quite unintentionally and with little awareness by its inhabitants, over the past century the Eastern United States has become one of the most heavily forested and densely populated regions in world history.  Nature Wars explores this marvelous story of environmental recovery and the opportunities and challenges that it brings to its residents and the entire globe in fascinating detail and with great insight by Jim Sterba.  This is a great book and a story with lessons for us all.” —David Foster, Ecologist and Director of the Harvard Forest, Harvard University

“If there is one lesson to be learned from Jim Sterba’s book, it is: Be careful what you wish for. Having decimated our planet’s natural state, we are blithely over-compensating, over –correcting and overturning the balance of nature yet again. Nature, as seen by most of us through a double glazed picture window revealing a manicured lawn….but what’s that moose being chased by a coyote being chased by a black bear, doing there?  Read Nature Wars and weep. Or at least, stop and think.” —Morley Safer

"In Nature Wars, Jim Sterba lays out battle lines that emerged after populations of species that declined to near-extinction by the end of the 19th century came roaring back...This book is sure to initiate discussion about an issue that seems likely to move closer to the forefront in the years ahead." —Jerry Harkavy

"In this book, Jim Sterba has given us a fascinating, powerful, and important lesson in why we should be careful when we mess with Mother Nature.” —Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump

“At last someone’s grappling with the elephant in the room – or rather the deer, the coyote, the beaver, the bear, all these damn animals crowding into our living space. Sterba’s book may strike some as observational comedy but he’s deadly serious. Every word rings true. Nature is vengeful. All I can say is, he better not take a walk in his backyard without a shotgun.” —John Darnton, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of Almost a Family

“A wonderful, thought-provoking, important book that will overturn everything you thought you knew about wildlife in America. Jim Sterba confronts the shibboleths that make man-versus-beast conflicts so vexing, divisive, and fascinatingly complex." —David Baron, author of The Beast in the Garden

“It’s a truly original piece of work, often – I would say – inspired, told in a pitch-perfect voice, just north of sarcastic and south of appalled. At any event, a terrific read on a subject that is all around us yet largely unobserved.” —Ward Just, author of Rodin’s Debutante

"Anything Jim Sterba writes is worth reading--and his latest, Nature Wars, is terrific. Sterba casts a reporter's sharp eye on a little noticed war unfolding under our noses, in our own backyards. We've messed with nature for way too long, and nature is getting even." —Joseph L. Galloway, co-author of We Were Soldiers Once...and Young and We Are Soldiers Still

“Jim Sterba has done a brilliant job explain how it happens that drivers more often than ever run into deer, wild turkeys fly into speeding car windshields and gorge on newly-planted seed corn, and why golf courses are filled with people chasing geese down the fairways with 5 irons in hand.  This informative and beautifully written book gives us the effect of civilization (often well-meaning) on the natural habitat, both flora and fauna.  I loved the book and learned a great deal from it.” —Peter Duchin, musician and author of Ghost of Chance

"If you love animals and trees and other wonders of the natural world, this book will astonish you. Sterba's great gifts are reportorial energy, out-of-the-box thinking, and an easy, relaxed prose style that makes Nature Wars a pleasure to read, even as its counterintuitive discoveries explode on every page." —Daniel Okrent, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition

“Most Americans now live not in cities but in regrown forests, among at least as many deer as when Columbus landed. Jim Sterba tells us how this came to be and why it isn’t all good. In graceful, clear-eyed prose, he explains why we need to relearn how to cut, cull and kill, to restore a more healthy balance to our environment.” —Paul Steiger, Editor-in-Chief, ProPublica

"Although few of us realize it, America is at a turning point where we must rethink our most fundamental ideas about nature, animals, and how we live. Fortunately we have a wise and witty guide in Jim Sterba, whose Nature Wars is my favorite kind of read -- a book that affectionately recasts much of what we thought we knew about our nation's past and our relationship to the American wild, while at the same time revealing how intimately we ourselves are a part of nature, but in the most surprising and unexpected ways. In Sterba's hands, your everyday notions about the creatures around you -- whether pests, pets, or magnificent beasts -- will turn into entirely new ways of seeing the world." —Trevor Corson, author of The Secret Life of Lobsters and The Story of Sushi

About the Author

Interesting information, but limited.
By Bill C
I found the information interesting. He concentrated on trees, deer, turkeys, Canada geese, and the like, all in the eastern United States. It would have been nice to see more species discussed (perhaps in not as much detail), like squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, o'possums, and others. Also, only a limited discussion of the mid-West, plains, or Rockies, and essentially nothing about the Pacific coast or Alaska and Hawaii. I am sure that the author annoyed both the animal rights groups and the animal control groups, with perhaps more annoyance to the former. It would be interesting to read a brief rebuttal from each group to see where they think he misrepresented.

Solid Discussion of an Emerging Social Issue
By Janie
I hesitate calling a book "important," especially one that probably will never be a major seller. This one, though fires an early salvo in a battle that promises to continue for years to come.

The immediate and limited purpose of this volume is to address the issue of emerging and ongoing conflicts between wild animals (both natural and feral) and humans in a contact of expanding woodlands and sprawling suburbia. As Sterba points out, these conflicts have expanded dramatically in the recent past and promise to continue in the foreseeable future as issues such as destruction of suburban landscapes and property damage resulting from road kill bring out legions of interested parties with both harmonious and conflicting proposed solutions. Sterba does a good job of discussing the pros and cons of some of these proposals, although the limited scope of this work precludes an encyclopedic treatment.

In a broader context, the author pushes his reader into a mindset that extends beyond the single-issue political solutions proposed by partisans in this issue into a new paradigm of management of such issues with an eye to husbanding society's limited resources. Sterba dismisses the proposals of feral cat fanciers, who favor spay/neuter-and-return policies, as being impractical in the context of the vast number of such animals. He also points out the destructive effects of such animals on wild bird populations, who possess their own political advocates. This discussion brings up the increasingly germane issue of how best to use governmental resources in an era of increasingly tight public budgets.

Sterba's book provides an easily accessible and largely objective discussion of this divisive issue, and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in any of its ramifications.

makes you think- what is natural ? Everyone who loves "nature" should read this book.
By David G
Other reviewers focused on how nature is taking back what we wrenched from the ground, rebuilding the primeval forest that stood across America's east coast. I read instead of man's twisting the environment into an artificial mockery of nature, picking winners and losers. When man interferes he upsets a balance and tilts it one way or another. What we are doing is better than strip mining and wholesale slaughter of entire species; but it is not a return to an unreal make beleive ideal forest created by skewed nature films either.

Morally he raises a dilemma. Unless you are a vegetarian is there anything ethically better about raising animals in captivity (farm) and then killing them dead in the prime of life versus letting them live free according to their nature and harvesting them (hunting). I do not hunt; but I have never had a moral outrage with people who do.

Man has removed the checks and balances that kept some species under control. Removing the predators, or introducing an invasive species can result in unforeseen consequences. Coyotes and deer now thrive in the environment we created. But society would never allow reintroducing the controls of mountain lions and wolves back in to diminish their over breeding and destruction. Saving wild horses ignores that they do not naturally belong on this continent. Feeding deer so you can hunt them probably makes more sense than feeding them so they can over breed and die. But feeding wild life upsets the balance and they cease to be truly wild. Zoos have their place; but they are not natural.

He doesn't say it but extrapolating from this book raises some additional questions. How far do we go to protect nature from itself? If a species is so limited in versatility that it can not survive the stress of change should we really be stopping change? Do we bring back the dinosaurs? Or perhaps further back to single cell organisms only? Some who worship nature, do not truly understand what a harsh mistress she is, as we have become separated from reality. Only recently have people begun to accept forest fires as a required natural part of a forest. But even now we will not accept fires near human habitation. When we try to "help" nature we often just pick winners and losers, not back to a fairy tale pristine nature that never really existed. We need to revisit our own natural roots as predators and recognize that saving every single individual wild creature is unrealistic.

Everyone who loves "nature" should read this book, preferably with an open mind..

Peter Fonagy Winner of the 2010 Sigourney Award!

Psychoanalytic theory influenced many facets of 20th century culture, and shows every sign of continuing to have an impact in the 21st. However, in order to sustain this influence it has to adapt to the challenges of out current intellectual environment. This book attempts to build a bridge between psychoanalysis and a dominant perspective in modern psychiatry and psychology: developmental psychopathology. This perspective studies biological, psychological and social influences that act on individuals, shaping their pathways through life. While psychoanalytical perspectives are inherently developmental, this is often left implicit. This book highlights the developmental bases for psychoanalytical ideas, and examines their assumptions and claims in relation to observational and other data gathered within neighboring disciplines. The book reaches back to the work of Freud, and covers North American and European ideas including the Klein-Bion model, the British Object Relations tradition, the work of Kernberg and Kohut as well as modern Relational Psychoanalysis.

Being Who I Am with Being You, Changing the World
By destinydana
I recently learned about Access Consciousness and Dr. Dain Heer. Something inside of me just "knew" I needed to explore what it is all about. It just feels like the right thing at the right time! This book has touched on things that resonate the truth within my Self which have been waiting a long long time for acknowledgement. I have had many light bulb moments! I am feeling a sense of relief and release as I read about the things that hold me back. The funny thing about this book is that real change is occurring just by bringing these things up and out! Dr. Dain has a way about him in the way he presents this information which is authentic and inspirational. It feels "ok" to be me. This book directs me to areas of my life where I need to question things to get to the truth of what's right for me. Funny thing, I attended a lecture on sacred geometry and physics a couple of days ago with one of the most brilliant scientific minds of our times, and much of what Dr. Dain has presented in this book matches what the physicist was saying about who we are are where we come from. How amazing is that? This book is a masterpiece and a gift to humanity! Please read it and pass it on.

A book that puts fuel into your rocket boosters!!!
By Groovasandy
This book is special and quite unlike any other book I have read until now! I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I picked it up. I just knew that something in it could help me and this turned out to be the case. To me, reading 'Being You, Changing the World' is a bit like being hugged by a dear old friend whom you haven't seen in ages and who doesn't criticise you for anything, a friend who knows exactly what to say to you and after you've been hugged by them you feel more peaceful and ok than you have for a long time!! After years of hiding depression and sadness it was a huge relief to read this book and to read about how Heer has changed his own life. Using the tools he suggests has also helped change this feeling of depression. The book also had me laughing out loud more than once!

It is written in simple language that is easy to follow, packed full of information and tools in digestible chunks that you can use there and then. What is also striking is the sense that Heer didn't write this book to show off his abilities or knowledge, but that he wrote it to get YOU the reader to realise what abilities and knowledge you have. I felt incredibly empowered after reading this book and that feeling has actually got stronger as time has gone on! I've been dipping into the book every now and then since finishing it and just reading one or two pages makes me feel better and more empowered to go out and do what I'd like to do in the world. It has made me incredibly optimistic and happy to know that there are people out there who care enough about other people to write a book of this kind and I hope that it finds its way into the hands of every person who could benefit from reading it. Thank you Dr Dain Heer!!

This book is for those "humanoids" who want to change the world
By Iona Main Stewart
Dain Heer is one of the main figures in Access Consciousness, and this "weird" book (to use a term Dain often applies to himself and others like him) presents the basic precepts of Access.

I have previously heard Dain Heer on shows on the net, so Access and Dain's way of being are not new to me. Even so, I did not always find this book easy to comprehend, Though I absolutely agree with everything I did "get".

As indicated by the book's title, Dain's basic concept seems to be, if you dared to really be you, this would change the world. And he is definitely doing his bit.

We are told that this is not a book of answers, but of questions. We are introduced to several basic questions we can start asking the Universe:

1) How does it get any better than this? (to be asked both when something good, and something bad, happens)

2) What's right about this I'm not getting? (I understand that by "getting" he here means "understanding")

3) What would it take to change this?

4) What else is possible?

5) What would it take for this to turn out better than I could have imagined?

6) Who am I today and what grand and glorious adventures am I going to have?

Dain contends that when we start asking these questions, great things will start to happen.

One of the main features of Access is the clearing statement, which is formulated a bit strangely, but when you're working with the problem or matter to be cleared, it is, again, contended, that clearing does in fact occur. My life hasn't changed because of Access, but I have several times felt a bit "lighter" during a clearing.

The clearing statement is:

"Right and Wrong, Good and Bad, POD and POC, All Nine, Shorts, Boys and Beyond".

Another of Dain's contentions is that something that is true for you always makes you feel lighter, while a lie always makes you feel heavier.

So you can always check whether to believe what people say, and whether you should do this or that. I must confess I can't always feel whether something makes me feel lighter or heavier, but apparently practice makes perfect. And the words in this book do make me feel lighter.

Dain wants to change the world, and he divides us who live in it into two categories - humans and humanoids. Humans constitute the majority - those who're satisfied with things the way they are, while humanoids are those like Dain who want a big change in the world. Humanoids are the ones this book was written for - those who are willing to "step into being the difference that you are - the non-judgment, the caring, the joy, the peace, the connection and the awareness of a different possibility".

We need to stop being judgmental and to claim our own potency. We need to let go of the idea that we are "wrong". Throughout our life we have taken on ourselves beliefs that we are wrong, but these beliefs actually belong to others.

What we need to do is at times to ask the question "Who does this belong to?". If we feel lighter, then whatever it is we're thinking of isn't ours and should be "returned to sender" (whoever "sender" is). The contention is that 98% of all our feelings and thoughts don't belong to us, and should be returned to sender. "You, being you, are light. You trying to be someone else are heavy."

This book is a different sort of book. I would conjecture that Dain has a strong Uranus in his horoscope. Even the set-up of this book is different and strange. When you think you've got to the end of the chapter, you haven't - there are a couple of pages more. Dain even uses language differently - he keeps talking, not about "who you are", but "who you be".

I find the book refreshing, and am planning on taking at least the first Access course. I recommend that you read the book, if you think you also are a humanoid, and want to "be you, and change the world" (and you must be, if you're reading this review).

About the Author
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was born Marguerite Marie Alacoque at Lhautecour, France, in 1647. Even as a young child, she preferred prayer and silence to ordinary recreation, possessing a great love for the holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. A mystic, she also experienced visions of our Lord while still young, and took her religious habit in 1671. Subsequently, she began receiving revelations of our Lord's Sacred Heart, and published an autobiography out of obedience to her superiors. St. Margaret Mary died in 1690 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.

Autobiography of St Margaret Mary
By John Lough
I hesitated to purchase this book after reading the long, detailed negative review by an earlier purchaser, but ultimately decided to buy it.

I have not regretted this. Yes, the book includes mortifications
several of which are impossible to fathom...
However, it is also rich in detail of her visions.

I have yet to come across the worst mortifications mentioned by the prior reader. That may be due to the way I read, but they havenn't jumped out at me.

Each section of several paragraphs or more is briefly summarized in a sidebar, making the book easy to navigate by topics of interest.

The famous vision of St MM's heart being carried into a furnace and then being replaced, aflame, within her, is well described.

I have no problems recommending this book for anyone interested in the origins of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart.

I Ordered 8 Copies of This Book From Amazon
By Seola A. Edwards
I bought my first copy of this book one month ago in Paray-le-Monial, France for my sister who is named after this saint. I wanted to know more about the saint's life and how she came to be chosen by the Lord to give us this devotion to the Sacred Heart. When we returned home I was lucky enough to be able to order 8 copies from Amazon so as to share with all my siblings.

St. Margaret Mary's autobiography is written in the language of the time (she lived from 1647-1690), which can seem a little strange at times. But, it is easy to understand and it's hard to put it down. She wrote in simple obedience and humility. ..."This "copybook" written in her hand is the "Autobiography" which is still treasured at Paray-le-Monial as a precious relic..."

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more and love the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The prayer section in the last chapter is worth the price of the book all by itself with its rich prayers for all ocasions. A great book to share with others!

A Soul on FIRE ...
By Kim Buck
What we have to do with here is a small volume of autobiography by the Seventeenth Century French saint, who beheld the Sacred Heart and brought its Public Devotion to the entire Catholic world.

This short book was written in the saint's own hand in the form of a narrative, with no distinctive breaks or chapters.

From the outset, the careful reader is brought directly into intimate rapport with the author, as immediately we receive an image of the psychological and spiritual struggles of the saint.

For the book is introduced with a statement from Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, claiming that she has written it as an act of obedience. She writes:

"It is for the love of Thee, O my God, and through obedience, that I submit to write this account, asking Thy pardon for the resistance I have made. Thou alone knowest how great my repugnance thereto is; Thou alone therefore canst give me strength to overcome it, for this obedience was given me by Thee."

That in fact, if it were her own choice, she is confessing she would destroy this chronicle of her life. Yet in this pledge of obedience, one can immediately sense the all encompassing love she has for her Divine Master, Our Lord, as well as the turmoil she experiences in living the depth and reciprocity of that love. She wants as always only to please Our Lord.

The first part of the book details her early years, where, from childhood she experienced herself to be under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

At a very young age, she made a vow of perpetual chastity, ignorant of the meaning of the words `vow' or `chastity'. In her own words, "Without knowing their meaning, I felt continually urged to pronounce the following words:"O my God, I consecrate to Thee my purity, and I make Thee a vow of perpetual chastity."

At age eight, she was sent to a convent for education, where at nine years old, she received her first Communion:

"This Communion shed such bitterness over all my little pleasures and amusements that I was no longer able to enjoy any of them ... Whenever I wanted to join in the games of my companions, I always felt something which called me and drew me aside into some little corner, leaving me no peace until I had followed it. Our Lord then made me give myself to prayer."

I am struck by how conscientious the young Margaret Mary at such a young age. And that at this age, she was already forming the lifestyle of a religious.

Having fallen ill, with no form of cure to be found, she was removed from the convent and sent home. She was then consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the attempt to find healing. As soon as the consecration was made, she was healed - the first of many miracles to occur in the saint's lifetime.

The book then moves, to relate the following part of her life, where her father having died, she began to care for her sick mother. The circumstances the pair found themselves in were incredibly difficult, under the authority of unkind relatives.

They kept the mother and child under lock and key, often refusing permission for Margaret Mary to attend Mass or pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. This caused so much pain to the young girl, that she would retreat to a secluded spot, where for hours she would remain kneeling, shedding tears of grief to her Blessed Lord.

This was the beginning of a life of torment and the Saint's words express this with intensity. Her use of language and the recording of such life events leave the reader with a deep sense of the inner life of the saint.

Caring for her ill mother, living with such limited freedom, she found herself in conflict with all those around her, who desired her to marry, rather than to enter the religious life. Even her ailing mother shared these wishes.

Against this incredible pressure, Saint Margaret Mary was bestowed the grace of becoming a religious in the order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, at the convent in Paray-le-Monial, France. The order which was founded by Saint Francis de Sales. In this section of the book, Margaret Mary records her religious life with incredible detail.

For, it was here, at the convent in Paray-le-Monial, that she found home and solace in her relationship with her betrothed, Our Blessed Lord. It was also here that the life of turmoil continued, for she paid dearly and continuously for the graces and privileges bestowed upon her. Her life was one of incredible deep struggle, one of continual torment and suffering.

The first time I read this autobiography, was many years ago, before my first pilgrimage to Paray-le-Monial. On that reading, I felt such an affinity with this saint that it surprised and even shocked me. This affinity was also experienced when I first prayed by her relics in the Visitation chapel at Paray. As I prayed there, I felt so at home, that I never wanted to leave her side.

Having now been to Paray-le-Monial more than twenty times, praying many times by her side, I am again surprised on reading her autobiography.

Yet, this time, my surprise is very different. It is one of feeling so very lacking in understanding of why Saint Margaret Mary's life was filled with so much suffering and torment. I feel inadequate to do justice to the experiences of this poor saint. Yet, I also sense a glimmer of knowing what the extremes of her life were for.

This glimmer illumines a picture of a soul offered perhaps as a victim, not only to purge her own darkness of heart, but also to experience the tormenting pains Our Lord experiences at the expense of human sin.

As I read the words of Saint Margaret Mary, I am given a picture of one who meets the intensity of evil in the world with a depth of sensitivity, rare and pure.

Her torments, her sufferings are caused by the fact that she so acutely feels the harm of sin, from within and without. She acutely feels her own sin, the sin of others and the sin of the world.

It is as though she is continuously scourged, with no rest from the assailant. It seems that the more she becomes obedient to the voice of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the more intensely she feels these things.

And as was so common in her time, the only peace she would often find, would be that relieved by her extreme mortifications and penances.

It is astonishing to read of Saint Margaret Mary's relationship with Our Lady, from such a young age. It is even more astonishing to follow the intense relationship throughout her life, from mid-teens on, with Our Lord. A relationship that is fueled by an almost constant dialogue between Himself and the saint.

One passage in particular, illumines the type of relationship they held, one that appears severe. She writes:

"One day, on account of some fault which I had committed, my Divine Master gave me the following lesson. "Learn" He said, "that I am a Holy Master and One that teaches holiness, I am pure and cannot endure the slightest stain. Therefore thou must act with simplicity of heart and with an upright and pure intention in My presence. Know that I cannot endure the least want of straightforwardness, and I shall make thee understand that, if the excess of My love has led Me to constitute Myself thy Master, in order to teach and fashion thee after My manner and according to My designs, nevertheless I cannot bear tepid and cowardly souls, and, if I am gentle in bearing with thy weakness, I shall not be less severe and exact in correcting and punishing thy infidelities."

She continues, "He has made me experience this all my life" and concludes with an admission that, "I own that nothing was more painful and terrible to me than to see Him ever so slightly displeased with me. All other sufferings, corrections and mortifications were nothing to me in comparison."

This relationship between Our Lord and Saint Margaret Mary is very much based on the importance to Our Lord of the vow of obedience. The importance of this vow becomes a theme throughout the latter part of the book.

We read of how Our Lord repeatedly chastises the poor young religious for disobeying her superiors and as well as for disobeying Himself. It is as though He is attempting to harness the rebellious nature of the saint by means of this vow, in preparation for the revelations to come.

In one case, the saint imagines Our Sovereign Lord will be pleased if she takes upon herself greater mortifications than she has been ordered to. She is severely reprimanded. Our Lord says to her, "Thou deceivest thyself ... in thinking to please Me by actions and mortifications chosen by self-will which, rather than yield, prefers to make superiors bend their will to it."

This is akin to a reprimand that on another occasion came from her vision of the Holy founder of the order, Saint Francis de Sales himself: "What is this, my daughter, dost thou think to please God in surpassing the limits of obedience, which is the foundation and principle support of this Congregation, and not austerities?"

Whilst it seems that earlier in her relationship with Our Lord, the accent is upon the Saint learning to overcome her rebellious nature, later on a shift occurs. Once she is more firmly harnessed by the Holy vow of obedience, the revelations begin.

This part of the book becomes even more extraordinary. As Saint Margaret Mary records these revelations, there seems to be a different quality in the way Our Lord addresses her.

This quality is incredibly passionate, like a fiery furnace of love about to burst its flames outwards. It can no longer be contained within Itself. Saint Margaret Mary has powerfully captured this quality.

As one reads her words, one can feel something of that which she experienced. That the fiery furnace of His Most Sacred Heart, brimming with love and mercy and an intense desire for mankind to know Him. wishes to be revealed to humanity.

In the first of these extraordinary revelations, Our Lord says, "My Divine Heart ... is so inflamed with love for men, and for thee in particular that, being unable any longer to contain within Itself the flames of Its burning Charity, It must needs spread them abroad by thy means, and manifest Itself to them (mankind)."

Throughout the book, an image of Our Lord develops. An image that appears VERY HUMAN. For the words of Saint Margaret Mary record His intense desire to be accompanied at Gethsemene, in His prayer and agony in the garden as well as His desire to be known through His Most Sacred Heart, as the Fount of Love and Mercy He is.

With these words, Our Lord then takes the heart of Saint Margaret Mary and places it within His own. He then names her, "the beloved disciple of My Sacred Heart."

Our Lord then outlines the requirements of devotion to His Most Sacred Heart to Saint Margaret Mary. With these words, He reveals those aspects of the devotion perhaps most well-known to us:

"Thou shalt recieve Me in Holy Communion as often as obedience will permit thee ...Thou shalt ... communicate on the First Friday of each month. Every night between Thursday and Friday I will make thee share in the mortal sadness which I was pleased to feel in the Garden of Olives ... And in order to bear Me company in the humble prayer that I offered to My Father, in the midst of My anguish, thou shalt rise between eleven o'clock and midnight, and remain prostrate with Me for an hour, not only to appease the divine anger by begging mercy for sinners, but also to mitigate in some way the bitterness which I felt at that time on finding Myself abandoned by My apostles."

So here, in this slim account of the saint's life, written in her own hand, we have a direct view into the beginnings of the Devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, as He Himself would have Himself known to us.

How to sum up this small, but so very rich volume? The author's words reveal directly not only the record of events and experiences of her life. They also reveal directly the qualities she felt that determined so much of her experience.

I suppose, if I was to find one word that could describe the way in which Saint Margaret Mary reveals her life, it would be `intensity'.

The intensity with which she describes her experiences, give the reader a penetrating depth into the psychological and spiritual nature of the saint.

It is as though one can really experience her life with her. Whether it is her suffering or her thought-life, her conversations with Our Lord or the revelations given her by Him. Each aspect of her life seems so fully revealed as to conceal virtually nothing. The intensity of her experience is directly communicated by means of her words, that the reader can feel that they have truly shared a part of her life with her.

I give thanks that against her own will, by obedience, Saint Margaret Mary was able to record this small and invaluable volume, which gives so much. How could we have done without it?

I thank you Saint Margaret Mary for all that you have shared with us. Your purity, your humility, your struggles, your depth of torment and suffering. And of course, the fire and passion and love of all that He, the Sacred Heart of Jesus revealed to you.

Such an incredible gift, thank you

The Ecological Design and Planning ReaderFrom Island Press

From Henry David Thoreau to Rachel Carson, writers have long examined the effects of industrialization and its potential to permanently alter the world around them. Today, as we experience rapid global urbanization, pressures on the natural environment to accommodate our daily needs for food, work, shelter, and recreation are greatly intensified. Concerted efforts to balance human use with ecological concerns are needed now more than ever.

A rich body of literature on the effect of human actions on the natural environment provides a window into what we now refer to as ecological design and planning. The study and practice of ecological design and planning provide a promising way to manage change in the landscape so that human actions are more in tune with natural processes. In The Ecological Design and Planning Reader Professor Ndubisi offers refreshing insights into key themes that shape the theory and practice of ecological design and planning. He has assembled, synthesized, and framed selected seminal published scholarly works in the field from the past one hundred and fifty years——ranging from Ebenezer Howard’s Garden Cities of To-morrow to Anne Whiston Spirn’s, “Ecological Urbanism: A Framework for the Design of Resilient Cities.” The reader ends with a hopeful look forward, which suggests an agenda for future research and analysis in ecological design and planning.

This is the first volume to bring together classic and contemporary writings on the history, evolution, theory, methods, and exemplary practice of ecological design and planning. The collection provides students, scholars, researchers, and practitioners with a solid foundation for understanding the relationship between human systems and our natural environment.

"With these papers, Ndubisi presents a comprehensive treatment of the evolution of one of our most important planning concepts: that planning decisions should be based on an understanding of land and people as elements of an ecological system….The Ecological Design and Planning Reader will be valued by all planning and design students seeking a comprehensive grounding in their field. It is a fascinating historical document as well as an import contribution to the planning literature.”
