For whatever reasons, many Christian students come to the academic study of the Old Testament viewing it as remote and irrelevant. For many, compared to the New Testament, it has little to offer. The thrust of this book is the very opposite(the Old Testament is essential for a balanced Christian life. This text seeks to explore with the student how the Old Testament still functions as God's Word, "profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" (2Ti 3:16 RSV).

From the Author
The basic theological issues of the Old Testament are as relevant now, at the end of the 20th century, as they were when originally penned. The reason lies in the unchanging nature of what it means to be human. The fundamental questions of human existence are theological questions(questions which are the same at all times and in all cultures. Questions like: Who am I? How did the world begin? Is there a God? What is God like? How can I know and please God? What will happen to me and the world? The essential message of the Old Testament speaks to these enduring questions, so the passage of centuries has not rendered it out-of-date. This book is designed to give the reader a grasp of the overall message of the Old Testament. It also attempts to show the significance of the message for our own day at the end of the twentieth century.

This book is absolutely necessary for people seeking an inspiring engagement with the Old Testament. Helyer reveals eight general themes permeating OT texts, and uncovers some truly wonderful treasures along the way. I assure you, unless you have studied the OT at a graduate-level seminary, you will benefit tremendously from having read this book.

Essential grammar for the advanced-intermediate student

This volume is perhaps the most important contemporary Arabic descriptive grammar in English. It is based on texts from the 1990s with a preference for texts other than high literature. In its 800 pages, it covers most of modern Arabic grammar and syntax.

As a reference grammar, it will not be necessary (perhaps not even useful) to the student until he is at least at intermediate level. The grammatical terminology is highly technical - there is a useful glossary of terms in the back - and has rather idiosyncratic variations from terms that have become standard over the last century and a half (e.g. the 'accusative' case becomes the 'dependant' case). This is annoying: more seriously in my opinion, no attempt at all is made to provide native Arabic terms. Grammar is illustrated by a wealth of examples, presented in unpointed Arabic script, in a formal transliteration (i.e. with i'rab transliterated) and in translation (sometimes two where the idiom differs vastly between English and Arabic). This is excellent, and mitigates my strongest criticism of the book - it is littered with typos, especially in the Arabic script. Fortunately with the transliteration, one has a check. It is disappointing that Routledge who, after all, are charging a vast sum equivalent to a Harissowitz or Brill book for the hard-back edition haven't tried to emulate the editorial standards of the serious academic presses.

However, despite complaints, this is a work that will amply repay study. I would still recommend the student to use a good teaching grammar - I like Haywood and Nahmad - before and as a guide to 'recommended' usage, especially as Haywood and Nahmad has reference to Arabic terminology (Wright could serve as a terminological reference for the more advanced Classical Arabic student, and indeed goes far beyond H&N in covering terminology). Finally, thanks to Routledge for bringing this book out at a price that a student can (just about) afford.

Karin Ryding's A Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic, which I thought might be comparable, is a fairly normal reference grammar of MSA. I personally prefer Ron Buckley's grammar,Modern Literary Arabic, to Ryding. It compliments Modern Written Arabic, and would be better as a first reference.

A very thorough and comprehensive grammar of MODERN Arabic. An elaborated table of contents is lacking. The index is almost useless. Authors have decided on certain linguistic terminology but failed to include references to common terminology in the index. If you look up the index for "Construct State" or "Status Constructus" you find nothing since the linguistic term used is "Annexation". This term is excellent (actually much more precise than "Construct State") but how is the reader supposed to locate it unless he reads the book cover to cover?

MANY typos in Arabic script. Even in verb paradigms.

Nevertheless, if you are searching for syntactical phenomena in MWA and you don't have a copy of Cantarino, or if you are looking for information about current trends in MWA , better have a copy of this book on your shelf.

Hattie C. Cooper knows all about having anxiety. She has Generalized Anxiety Disorder and has previously struggled with phobia disorders. Hattie is the founder of the blog The Anxious Girl’s Guide to Dating, which has inspired thousands of readers since its 2013 launch. Cooper’s work has appeared in Calyx magazine, BuzzFeed, and The Page Girls. She is a Northern California native and current Seattle resident. Follow her on Twitter @CooperHattie.

Good tips for overcoming social anxiety

I looked forward to reading this book just from hearing the title. I never knew that having anxiety in social situations was an actual disorder: social anxiety disorder or SAD. I thought it was just shyness, but the author explains the difference. She also explains that social anxiety can lead to isolationism and depression. My problem is attending social events with a large group. Usually, I walk in and no one says anything to me. So I try to avoid events. The book gave some good practical tips to help in this situation or others like it. The best advice was to be proactive, and instead of sitting in a corner alone, to decide to speak to three people. And to come prepared with some open ended questions. This way, you're not waiting for people to approach you. This tip alone was worth the time I spent reading the book. She gave many other good tips, both physical and psychological, to combat anxiety. I look forward to trying some essential oils, too. I liked the book because it explains the theory plus gives practical suggestions. I received this product free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Useful Information and Strategies!

Being someone who suffers with anxiety, I was happy to get a paperback copy of Thriving With Social Anxiety by Author Hattie C. Cooper. I like the way this book breaks down different types of strategies, from therapeutic, daily scheduled social anxiety management, both sides of popular treatments like mindfulness and cognitive behavior therapy. I really enjoyed learning about the natural remedies which include, aroma therapy, exercise, yoga, mediation and even remedies through diet. I like that this book also covers way to be assertive and confidence building. I really like that there is nothing complicated about these therapies/strategies and I was able to use them in my daily life. I have found ways to deal with anxiety by slowing down, being mindful and working on remaining calm. I like that this author is not just a person who specializes in social anxiety, a doctor or someone who has studied the subject, but rather that she knows what it is like to have social anxiety and uses the therapies herself to manage daily life. I think this is a great resource for someone who has been diagnosed with social anxiety and I think it has a lot of useful information. I like that there are quiz's that show you where you are on the social anxiety spectrum I recommend it.

An easy to read book that uses real life situations and methods to deal with them.

This book is written in a simple, easy to understand style. Types of Social anxiety are discussed, as well as things to do to help overcome what can be a crippling issue for some. There are quizzes to help determine where you are on the social anxiety ladder. While this is not for self- diagnosing, it does help you to understand that there is help for you if you do have any sort of anxiety. It has methods for coping with your anxiety. Anything from medicines, to journal writing, to meditation can help alleviate stressful anxiety and panic attacks. There are suggestions based on the time you have to get calmed down: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes. Having an idea of methods to use before hand can help to lower stress and anxiety levels when you need them. As a sufferer of social anxiety, I did find that reading about some of the situations affected me. I am a believer in trudging through, so I was using some of the methods being discussed as I was reading. This is a good book to read for helping to get a handle on managing social anxiety. The Shattering was amazing. At first, from the summary, I thought it'd just be a book about murders (which I love, btw!), but it's so much more. I'm awed at the amount of complexity this book packs together--suicide, murder, bullying, being gay, and magic.

Yeah, you heard that: there's magic included in this book. And it's not like waving wands or anything, but more Wicca magic. White magic and black magic and oh my god, so amazing.

What I really loved about The Shattering is it's told in three points of view: Keri, Janna, and Sione. And it's set in New Zealand. Summerton, specifically, and it's CREEPY once you figure the book out.

I don't know what to say without spoiling the book or gushing about it. I don't have to say everything about it (because I LOVE IT SO MUCH) or just gush (again: I LOVE IT SO MUCH) about it either. So let's go with the characters:

Keri. She's smart, knows what to do, but when her brother kills himself, she doesn't have a plan and this throws her life in chaos.

Janna. Janna, Janna. Janna can sometimes be a bitch, but she's also nice at times. And she's in a band called Vikings to the Left (love that name!)

Sione. Oh, my poor Sione. He's the one who's being bullied most of the time and god, every time it happened, I wanted to kick somebody's ass. He doesn't deserve to be treated like they treated him!

Also, since it's told in three points of view, I must say this: they're distinctive. Keri's POV is told in first person while Sione's and Janna's are in third person. And even if they were all told in one narrative, I think you'd still be able to figure it out. Janna's voice is a bit rougher at times, while Keri's is soft--but she also has a rough edge, and Sione. Sione sounded like a wounded puppy or a turtle stuck in its shell. He was just so wounded that I really do want to give him a hug and kiss him.

And all the issues? They were tackled neatly and not like you were being pounded over the head with a message. This is one book I'm definitely going to have to shove in people's hands at bookstores. So much love!
