Must Own
By Jesse
I first bought the Kindle version. Don't. It's ok but the same money will get you a used hard copy, which is far superior.

The drawings are fantastic and the dimensioning is better than the latest textbooks on dimensioning drawings. You do have to know how to create mouldings and use a lathe (for the turned parts), so it's not a beginner book in that sense. But it does provide lots of inspiration and can help you when you're ready to try to make your own mouldings for architectural purposes or for furniture.

Even if you're not interested in making mouldings the book serves a reference that's really unique and might help you recognize styles and time periods when something was made.

Basically, if you're reading this just go ahead and buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

Let's Learn Kanji: An Introduction to Radicals, Components and 250 Very Basic Kanji, by Yasuko Kosaka Mitamura, Joyce Mitamura

Everyone agrees that it is possible to learn to speak Japanese in a reasonable amount of time, but no one has ever said that about reading and writing it. It is widely held that spoken and written Japanese require separate efforts by the student, as if these two aspects were in fact distinct languages.

A first step toward alleviating this situation was taken by Yasuko Mitamura in 1985 with the publication of Let's Learn Hiragana and Let's Learn Katakana, which continue to help thousands of students every year to master these two forms of Japanese script. Now, Let's Learn Kanji goes to the heart of the problem: the learning of kanji (i.e., Chinese characters as they are used in Japan).
Not simply a brilliant exposition but also a workbook, it teaches the student how to write the basic strokes, how to put these together into full-fledged kanji, and how kanji function in the context of example sentences. Progress is continually checked, and the student is encouraged through quizzes and exercises. The result: 250 fundamental characters learned almost painlessly.

Excellent reference book
By torrurb
This book has been a useful addition to my collection of Japanese study books. I had previously studied James Heisig's book, REMEMBERING THE KANJI, which was helpful in learning the system by which Kanji are formulated. Kanji are after all only graphic symbols of ideas and the more complex kanji are assembled from simpler graphic parts which themselves can have meaning. The Mitamura book gives all of the Japanese names of the various radicals and also of other non-traditional but useful components. I think it was easier to absorb because I had gone through the Heisig book first. Mitamura has exercises that help one to learn how to analyze an unknown kanji from its graphic parts. Both of these books together helped me learn this method of analyzing an unknown kanji. I recommend using these two books together with a graded reader like KANJI FROM THE START by Martin Lam and Shimizu Kaoru. After going through these three books I found myself reading Japanese newspapers with only occasional breaks to consult my Kanji Dictionary (Nelson).

Systematic, Well done.
By Peter A. Herrmann
Very systematic approach that I'd imagine anybody could use. I appreciate the way they show the order of strokes, and also the exercizes. Learning this stuff for the first time at the age of near 70 is a great mental challenge ... esp. since I've never been 'right brain' (ie visual) kind of person, but the method they use is successful for me (and, no avoiding use of the right side of the brain for this stuff).

Great book
By Graeme
This book breaks down radicals and the different types of radicals present in Kanji. A non-Japanese or Chinese speaker will no doubt have a lot more work to do in the way of learning kanji and this is a useful resource for doing so.

From the Inside Flap
What's NEW in the 2016 edition of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World?

The 2016 edition has fabulous new trip planning tools and is completely re-organized for easier reading. Here are the highlights:

The Introduction has a new chart showing what’s new in Walt Disney World over the past 2, 5, and 10 years. If you haven’t been to Disney World in a while, these are the highlights for your next trip.

Part 1 – Planning Before You Leave Home has an excellent new trip planning timeline. A vacation to Disney World is different than other places, because there’s more demand than supply for the best rides, restaurants, and hotel rooms. This new timeline shows when you can make those reservations, and where in the book to read for more information.

Part 2 – Time and Money has a new chart showing how much Disney vacation your family can get for $500, $1000, $1500, and $2000. The #1 thing most families are unprepared for is the cost of a Disney trip, so this chart shows what you can get at different price points, and the tradeoffs to be made for different budgets.

Other new and updated things in Part 2 include: A new section showing how to save $400 on your trip; updates to how FastPass+ affects your wait in line at specific attractions; and the latest on Disney admission prices, including where to find the best Disney ticket discounts.

Part 3 – Accommodations Includes updated reviews of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Villas, the Polynesian Village Resort and Villas, upcoming construction at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Villas; the B Resort at the Disney Springs Resort Area, and information on the new budget hotels opening at Disney’s Flamingo Crossings in 2016. We’ve also updated the “best rooms to request” and room diagrams for every Disney resort.

This section also includes the new rules for Disney’s Dining Plan, spelling out Disney’s expanded policy on what counts as a snack.

Part 4 – Dining We moved this section of the book toward the front, because dining is such an important part of planning your Disney vacation. We’ve got reviews of new restaurants include The Boathouse at Disney Springs and Harambe Market at the Animal Kingdom, plus updates to dozens of restaurant reviews throughout Walt Disney World.

Part 5 –Walt Disney World with Kids includes new recommendations for discount stroller rental companies in Orlando. These companies offer cheaper rates than Disney for long stays, more comfortable strollers, and they’ll even drop off and pick up at your resort. We’ve also got the latest on where to meet the Disney characters at each park, and where to find the best character meals.

Part 7 – Arriving and Getting Around has new reviews of the Uber and Lyft ride-sharing apps for getting around Walt Disney World and Orlando. (Spoiler alert: Uber was about half the cost of a taxi during our test trips over identical routes.) We’ve also got updates on bus transportation times between every Disney resort and theme park.

Part 9 – The Magic Kingdom Includes a new chart showing when each Magic Kingdom attraction typically runs out of FastPass+ reservations during the day. This is what you need to know when you’re choosing your advance FastPass+ reservations, because it’ll show you what the high-demand rides are for you to get 2 months before your visit, and which can wait until you’re in the park. We’ve also got new dining charts, showing the Magic Kingdom’s best restaurants for counter-service and sit-down restaurants in each area.

Other new or updated features include: Our favorite new spots for watching the Wishes fireworks, news on Adventureland’s new Skipper’s Cantina restaurant, and how to navigate around the park’s parades. Our Magic Kingdom touring plans include new advice on which attractions make best use of FastPass+, and what time of day you should make those reservations. Finally, we’ve got all new behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Disney historian Jim Hill.

Part 10 – Epcot As with the Magic Kingdom, the Epcot chapter includes the new day-of FastPass+ availability chart, and new dining chart showing the best restaurants in the park.
We cover the Frozen-themed attractions in Norway that open in 2016: the Frozen Ever After boat ride, and Royal Sommerhaus princess meet-and-greet. The chapter also includes updates on the closure of Innoventions West, tips on visiting The Seas at night, and whether IllumiNations is a good use of FastPass+. Jim Hill has all new anecdotes, too.

Part 11 – Disney’s Animal Kingdom includes the new day-of FastPass+ availability chart, and new dining chart showing the best restaurants in the park. We’ve also got new reviews for the park’s expanded Discovery Island Trails, and lots of information on the new nighttime Rivers of Light show that opens in 2016. That show promises to expand afternoon crowds at the park, so we’ve got new tips on how to avoid traffic in the park, too. There’s also a new set of Animal Kingdom stories from Jim Hill.

Part 12 – Disney’s Hollywood Studios The big news here, and it’s controversial, is that we recommend skipping the Studios on trips of 1 to 3 days. There are so many closed or outdated attractions at the park that it’s not worth your hard-earned $80 to $100 of admission. And while Disney should eventually announce formal plans for major Star Wars- and Pixar-themed expansions, it’ll take years for those to be finished. In the meantime, we suggest Universal Studios as an alternative.

If you’ve got more time on your trip, our updated Studios coverage includes the new day-of FastPass+ availability chart, and new dining chart showing the best restaurants in the park. The chapter contains a new review of For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-a-Long Celebration, plus new insider stories from Jim Hill.

Parts 13 to 15 cover the expansions at Universal Studios Florida, including the new Skull Island: Reign of Kong attraction scheduled to open in 2016, the new, moderately-priced Sapphire Falls resort also opening in 2016. We also cover the new restaurants at Universal CityWalk: NBC Sports Grill & Brew, with an on-site microbrewery, Cowfish sushi and burgers (they’re delicious), and more. Finally, we keep you updated on the latest Harry Potter news at Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle.

Two more big changes to mention: We’ve consolidated all of our nightlife and shopping coverage into a single chapter covering Disney Springs and Universal CityWalk. Both Disney and Universal are putting huge amounts of money into ambitious expansion plans for these shopping/dining/entertainment complexes. We’ve unified our coverage of these into a single chapter, allowing you to see in a single place everything that’s available in each location.

We’ve also consolidated our coverage of Disney’s recreation, sports, and spa options into a new chapter, so you can see all of the options available to your family in a single place. The chapter includes new sections on runDisney, Disney’s ever-expanding lineup of family-friendly distance races, with coverage on each race and how to get started training. And if talk of running makes your muscles sore, we’ve got a review of the fabulous new Four Seasons Resort Orlando spa.

Most Complete Guide to WDW & Universal
By Joseph Boone
The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World is by far the largest guidebook for the area. Weighing in at a whopping 832 pages, you would expect, or at least hope, that it would be the most comprehensive and informative of all the Orlando guides. To help readers decide for themselves, I've broken my review down into sections by subject so you can focus on what matters most to you.

Hotels:
Disney hotels receive exhaustive coverage with ratings on many factors such as room quality, noise level, pool facilities, value, and more. There is a lengthy write-up discussing each hotel including their strengths and weaknesses. They even provide guidance on specific rooms to ask for and which to avoid when you make your reservation.

For those hotels outside of the resort, the coverage is less exhaustive but still comprehensive. A map shows the location of well over 100 area hotels, there are charts grading them on room quality, overall ratings, and cost. Information is also provided on how long it takes to get to each Disney theme park from the hotel. Some of the better hotels get full write-ups.

In addition to coverage of specific hotels, there is general advice as well. A few of the topics include advice on how to get deals on your room, discussion of the pros and cons of staying inside the confines of Disney World Resort, and an explanation of how the Disney hotels are classified. All told, there are more than 175 pages devoted to accommodations and none of it is wasted. This is not only the best coverage of hotels for Orlando, it's the best I've ever seen in any guidebook.

Dining:
Full service restaurants all receive a full write-up with detailed descriptions and ratings for food quality, value, and an overall score. Brief summaries are presented for the places offering counter service. In addition to the opinions of the authors, reader survey scores are reported so you can see what percentage of readers liked that restaurant. This is extremely helpful and any place I've tried that scores well on both fronts has always been a winner. Note that all of the above is limited to coverage inside of Disney World. There are also recommendations for the some of the best restaurants of various types outside the resort and brief coverage of the options in Universal's City Walk.

Theme Parks:
Full coverage is offered for The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney-MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom as well as Disney's water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Universal is also covered with Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure (Including lots of Harry Potter material) getting equally comprehensive coverage. Sea World is covered, but only briefly. Busch Gardens in Tampa is not covered at all. In fairness, no guide to Disney World offers detailed coverage of these two parks. You can purchase Beyond Disney: The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando, SeaWorld & the Best of Central Florida for this information if you're interested in visiting one or both of them.

So what constitutes full coverage of all the parks listed above? There's general background and information followed by a map and advice on orienting yourself. And then there are full descriptions and ratings for every attraction in each park. Separate ratings are provided for a number of age groups to help you evaluate the potential entertainment value for your group. Live entertainment is covered as well as advice on where to watch fireworks and parades. Finally, there are the touring plans. These are detailed itineraries designed to help you save hours of waiting time by visiting attractions in a certain order. This is only necessary if you go during summer or other peak tourist seasons. But if you do, they can be invaluable.

One final word on the theme park coverage. This guide, and many others, provides detailed descriptions of each attraction. Think about how much you really want to know before reading these. If you haven't visited Orlando before, you can rob yourself of a lot of pleasant surprises by reading all of this material. I would recommend using the ratings and reading just enough to get a vague idea of the attraction but not to go further.

Misc. Sections:
In some respects, this is almost the best part of the entire book. It's hard to overstate how diverse the information presented in this book is. There are tips on avoiding/healing blisters on your feet, how to find cheap airfare, what time of year to visit, going with kids, going as a couple, advice for pregnant women, seniors, and much more. Common activities like golf and shopping are also covered. It's almost endless... if you can think of it there's a good chance that it's in this guide.

To sum it up, the authors did indeed produce the most comprehensive and informative guide for Walt Disney World and the Orlando area. No other guide even comes close to providing this much detail. Indeed, the most common criticism of this guide is usually that it's too much information and some people find it overwhelming. If this is your first impression upon opening the book, I would recommend focusing on those sections containing the information you're most interested in and get to the rest when you feel up to it. If you are anxious to see photos (this guide is text only), you might want to pick up The Complete Walt Disney World 2015: The Definitive Disney Handbook. It doesn't have anywhere near as much detailed information, but it's packed with great shots and beautifully presents the visuals of the area.

The winner and still Champion............
By James D.
Bought this book every year since before 2005. I first used it for our family trips to Disney we'd take every couple of years. I now am a DVC member, Annual Pass Holder, D23 member and live 30 minutes from WDW. My point.....any and everyone can use it, the first timer or experienced visitor! The author(s) including Len Testa's amazing stat's and "Touring Plans" help make this book a must have! They use teams of researchers and even psychologists to help maximize their findings and conclusions doing our research and investigating for us. The book is un-biased, independent, and honest. You can use as much or as little information as you choose. The book is broken down into sections, with easy to understand rating systems for all the Parks, Rides, Attractions, on and off site restaurants and lodging, including just about everything for your monthly. annual, or trip of a lifetime to 'The World.' WDW has and is going thru some major changes, with even more to come, making this book invaluable! Honestly.....with what it costs to visit 'The Mouse' anymore, don't we need all the help we can gather to get the most out of our vacation, time and...money!?

Probably the best Guidebook out there.
By RiDE
Well, if you're reading this you and I are likely cut from the same cloth: type A, slightly neurotic, want to have everything planned out in advance, going to get X, Y and Z done if it KILLS YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE. I like to research things thoroughly before I start, whether it's a remodeling project or planning a trip to Disney World. I read this, Birnbaum's Official Guide to Walt Disney World, and the Complete Walt Disney World (all 2016 editions) in preparation for my upcoming trip. All three overlap in that you'll get info about the Disney hotels, the parks (there are 4! I didn't even know that until I started doing research) and dining options. All three books describe the rides in varying detail and have various tips/tricks scattered throughout to aid you in your preparations. Birnbaum and Complete Guide have better pictures (this book doesn't have any), if you need to examine photos of the Dumbo ride for some reason.

- I personally found Birnbaum a little too enthusiastic about...well, everything. They loved Toy Story Mania. They adored Be Our Guest, and had only glowing praise for the Stitch show that everyone else appears to hate. Keep in mind that they ARE the official guide, and most likely it's written somewhere in their contract that they aren't allowed to say anything bad about Disney World or Disney will come break their knees (seriously, I couldn't find one thing). Birnbaum also didn't really delve into off-site hotels (i.e., hotels that aren't owned/operated by Disney). I wouldn't recommend this one if you're on a budget (staying offsite, eating the free peanuts from the flight for breakfast), because they will almost certainly blow right past it. One thing Birnbaum has over the other two: coupons in the back, for things like golf or X off at a certain restaurant. (Now whether those coupons would actually serve any purpose for you is something you'll have to determine on your own.)

- On the other end of the spectrum, the Complete Guide was like going to Disney World with your grumpy uncle who forgot his pain meds and walking stick. Sure he'll go on the teacups - but you can bet there will be complaining, grumbling and plenty of "back in my day, candy was a nickel!" stories to endure. This guide is what I'd expect if you asked the internet, collectively, to write a guide about Disney World. Kinda funny, sometimes snarky and overall full of information you can usually get elsewhere.

My favorite by far? This book - The Unofficial Guide (Touring Plans). Yes they shove "BUY OUR SUBSCRIPTION!" at you roughly every other page. But here are three things to keep in mind:

1. It's 12.95 for a year (or 1.08/month), which is literally a drop in the bucket compared to what you're about to spend at the Happiest (and certainly one of the most expensive!) Place on Earth.

2. You don't HAVE to buy it. You can, as an adult (probably), just decide "thanks but no thanks". Nobody is holding a gun to your head forcing you to purchase the plan. The website for Touring Plans also allows you to look through the crowd calendar day-by-day for free, so you can get an idea of whether it would be something you'd want to pay for. (Side note: you can also find other crowd calendars for free, just google it. I feel TP's real value comes in their phone app and their neat plans).

***NOTE: I got my touring plan subscription for free, through my travel agent. But I would have sprung for the 12.95 anyway (see above). If you own this book you also get a little discount, or you can search for a discount on a site that rhymes with housewavers (I'm not allowed to put the actual site).

I like this book because it's very, very thorough. You'll see what I'm talking about when you get it - it clocks in at over 800 pages, and most of it is actually useful. Some sections won't be for everyone (there's an entire chapter devoted to kids, which I don't have), but most of it is at least entertaining to read, if not horribly informative. The book doesn't go straight into hotels - first it advises you to figure out what you want to do, and when to stay. It gives you ideas for a budget and various other useful information (car rental vs shuttle vs riding a horse...okay maybe not that last one). The meat of the book is info about the different hotels (they cover the Disney hotels extensively but also dedicate a fair amount of coverage to nearby non-Disney owned hotels/motels), the four different parks and all their rides, restaurants, shows and etc., the waterparks and Disney Springs. They also have some things to say about tours (like Keys to the Kingdom or VIP - and may I just add that if you're doing the VIP PLEASE TAKE ME WITH YOU).

There's even a section about Universal (disclaimer: which I didn't read, because I'm waiting for Nintendo to show up before I go there).

When I first started planning this trip I laid awake at night frozen by indecision: what am I supposed to do first? How long do I stay? Off-site hotel or Disney property? What if I mess up our vacation and ruin everything everywhere? This book helped set my mind at ease by helping me know what to expect and what to do (and what to avoid!). Disney World is very, very overwhelming (even for obsessive planners). It takes hours of reading and research and even then you might not find all the info you need/want. It's a huge undertaking to plan a vacation here, especially if it's your first time/you don't go that often and you're looking to get the most time for your money (if you're an AP you can probably just ignore me). In situations like this I think it's wise to take all the help you can get - from people who have been there before you. I feel Touring Plans accomplishes this best with their as-unbiased-as-someone-can-be-about-Disney reviews (they had negative things to stay about Stitch), their in-depth and extensive testing (I would rather know too much than not enough), and the sense of humor (the chapter on dealing with children is titled: The Ecstasy and the Agony).

Doing Research/Reading Research: Re-Interrogating Education, by Paul Dowling, Andrew Brown

This bestselling text enables beginning researchers to organise and evaluate the research they read, and to plan and implement small scale research projects of their own. It gives structured, practical guidance on:

  • the development of a research question
  • techniques of data collection
  • qualitative and quantitative forms of analysis
  • the writing and dissemination of research.

The authors present research as a principled activity that begins with the establishing and structuring of theoretical and empirical fields and research findings as serving to ask questions of educational practice rather than directing it.

This revised and updated second edition includes a new chapter dealing with the complex issue of research ethics. It also includes consideration of digital technologies and new media, both as settings of research and research tools, the chapters on qualitative and quantitative analysis have been expanded and the annotated bibliography updated.

The authors have been active researchers in educational studies for more than twenty years. They have also supervised numerous doctoral and masters dissertations and taught research methods programmes in various higher education institutions around the world as well as in the Institute of Education, University of London.

Excellent comprehensive alternative energy resource
By Andrew Kneeter
Dr. Gevorkian's book is an outstanding primer on the very broad subject of alternative energy for buildings. It's a rapidly evolving industry with countless options to consider for each project. This book is well organized, bringing clarity to an otherwise overwhelming subject.
