this whole book is an ache. and a balm. daley-ward effortlessly mines the bone. the diamond from the difficult. the things that are too bright and taboo. she lays her hands on the pulse of the thing and gives wide breath to the epic realities of women. love. sexuality. poverty. sex work. sadness. joy. damage. and restoration. assigning them all the grace. all the nurturing. and all the love they deserve.

a master storyteller, daley-ward is uncannily attentive and in tune to the things beneath life. beneath the skin. beneath the weather of the everyday. her poetry and prose are intimate and distant. sonorous and staunch. unwilling to yield and wondrously supple. delicate and metallic. daley-ward's extraordinary talent and ability to both see and write the veins of life is a gift. and it is one that i am truly. truly. grateful for.

CLOSE TO THE BONE

As someone who writes my own Poetry, I'm going to be completely transparent here and say, rather strangely, I'm not really that interested in other people's. I freely admit that makes me rather self-absorbed and self-indulgent. Then, this book came to my attention- by a fascinating woman - and I. COULD. NOT. PUT. IT. DOWN. It's become one of those handful of books that I take with me on holiday- when I move house, it doesn't go into storage with 99% of my other books. Because it's too important and too inspiring. I need it near me at all times. This book is probably one of the best 3 books I've ever raid, if not, DEFINITELY one of the top 5 and CERTAINLY the best book of Poetry I've ever read. Brave, startling, honest, autobiographical, beyond clever. The poem in this book entitled 'Mental Health' has since gone onto become my favourite poem of all time. This book changed me and inspired me that I could write my own. The writer is quite simply, a master of language and words and creating visions. Making you think about situations in ways that you've never even thought of before. Relatable, accessible, dignified, truthful, integral, necessary- it's a book you go back to for repeat readings and sip in and out of to help you through certain days such is its magnificence. I for one, in future, will buy this as a birthday or christmas gift for anyone I feel would appreciate how precious it is. A startling debut. You Need Not Write a Novel to Tell a Story

Yrsa Daley Ward's writing is raw, powerful and provocative. The poems in this collection address gender and gender identity, sexuality, misogyny, sexual assault, depression, suicide, family, sex work and so much more. There are not poems that will soothe your soul or ease your mind. The words are sharp, and more often than not, the endings are bittersweet. But these poems are ever so vital and necessary. An amazing collection.

About the Author
Henry Gray was born in 1827 and lived most of his life in London. He died of smallpox aged just 34, a year after the second edition Anatomy Descriptive and Surgical (as Gray's Anatomy was first known) was published.

Great for collecting, but there are better books for studying.

I would give 5 stars, owing to the fact that this is a pioneering classic, but many students of anatomy may be unaware of this text's drawbacks for modern-day use. It's certainly worth the purchase price as a historical item (along the same lines as buying a printing of Newton's Principia), but if you want to learn anatomy on the cheap, I would strongly recommend instead to buy a used copy of any of the modern college textbooks, and just go back a couple of editions from whichever one is current. Examples include the textbooks by Marieb or Tortora. In contrast with more current works, this book is much more laborious to read, the illustrations are a bit difficult to interpret (the hand-written labels sometimes border on illegible), and face it, our understanding of anatomy has advanced tremendously since the time this was written, 100 years ago. But the illustrations are aesthetically pleasing, plus this classic edition predates copyright, which means you can freely re-use the text and images however you like. Once you get a feel for the style of the illustrations, you will recognize them being widely used for artistic and educational purposes. Grab a copy for your coffee table, but if you really want to learn anatomy, you'll eventually turn elsewhere.

Great book. Marvelously written, with a very detailed text and nice explanations. Wonderful drawings. Nice printing quality. You don't even need an anatomy atlas when you've got this book in hands. A must have for medical students.

Got this as a gift for my girlfriend who is studying to be an athletic trainer. She has been wanting a copy to further her knowledge of the anatomy of the human body and has been enthralled reading it. It is a little more difficult for her to read than she anticipated, but it is only helping her understand more by figuring it all out

A Must Have for the Do-It-Your-Selfer

This book is a must have for the occasional do-it-your-selfer. Being a compilation of all of the Don Casey books on sailboat maintenance, I find myself pulling this book off the shelf more often than any other maintenance book I own.

I find the drawings and step by step instructions to be well thought out and easy to follow. Geared for the occasional weekend warrior, this book shows you how to do it right while pointing out many of the pitfalls that often accompany a sailboat maintenance project.

I highly recommend it for those like me who own an aging sailboat but don't have a Pentagon sized budget laying on the side to give the yard.

She explicates Plato's ideal city; Sforzinda, the first Renaissance utopian proposal; the urban dream of early-sixteenth-century Englishman Thomas More, who coined the term utopia; and so-called new-world utopian playgrounds. As Eaton moves into the machine age, plans for ideal cities (Le Corbusier presides) grow more and more ambitious, extreme, and morbidly entrancing. Ruth Eaton, a noted historian, is currently involved in a major project dealing with sustainable development applied to housing, architecture and urban design. Over the last two decades she has acted as a freelance curator for numerous large international exhibitions, among them Living Bridges, Inhabited Bridges: Past, present and future at the Royal Academy in 1996, and Utopia: The Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris in 2001.

BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED, YET GENUINELY INFORMATIVE

Can one design an "ideal city"? A virtual metropolitan utopia, where all residents can live in peace and harmony? Well, many people throughout history have thought so, and designed detailed plans for creating such a city; and in some cases, these plans have even been put into place (not always according to the exact specifications of the designer, however).

Ruth Eaton's book is a wonderful (to call it "richly illustrated" is an understatement) presentation of this dream. Although there were some depictions of the earthly "ideal" in, say, the Middle Ages (usually contrasted with the glories of Heaven), it was with the Renaissance that such dreams really began to multiply, even as the concept of "utopia" in literature (e.g., Thomas More's Utopia," Francis Bacon Essays and New Atlantis) began to develop. Everything had its place, from the vast quarters for the king, to the church.

The book then traces the ideal being exported to the New World (often with new cities being planned along a rigid 'grid' design), and finding a fertile ground with the rise in the 19th century of genuine utopian thinkers such as Charles Fourier and Robert Owen, who actually built utopian communities. The desire to reject the growth of "urban squalor" in the designs of men like John Rushkin and William Howard, as well as the advent of progressive architectural designs by men such as Frederick Law Olmstead (Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing the American Landscape (Universe Architecture Series)) and Ebenezer Howard (Garden Cities of To-morrow) are covered. The work of later architects such as le Corbusier, and of course Frank Lloyd Wright, are also surveyed. Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti is also briefly mentioned.

While the coverage of these topics is not "deep," and persons desiring detailed coverage of specific areas will have to look elsewhere, this book is a sumptuous introduction to this topic, and is even suitable as a "coffee table book" for the casual reader.
