Kling, associate professor in religious studies at the University of Miami, studies the symbiotic relationship between scripture and society. In particular, he considers eight selections from the Bible—sometimes a single verse, other times a selection of verses, and then again entire chapters or books—and shows how each changed the direction of the Christian church. In doing so, he illustrates the vibrancy of the text, the controversies that have been inspired by famous biblical passages and the church's integration of scripture into its life. Starting with St. Anthony and the roots of the monastic movement and continuing up to contemporary thoughts on the ordination of women, Kling explores how a single person, or a group of people, can attach new meaning and added importance to scripture, providing the impetus for radical change in the church and in the wider society. He sees the abolitionist and peace movements as expressions of a biblical approach that extends time-bound stories (the exodus, for example) into always applicable lessons. This book is nimbly written for the general reader. Although it treats complex issues and draws upon scholarly sources, the text itself is eminently accessible, with further thoughts consigned to nearly 50 pages of endnotes.

David W. Kling is professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Miami. He is the author of A Field of Divine Wonders: The New Divinity and Village Revivals in Northwestern Connecticut, 1792-1822 (1993) and co-editor of Jonathan Edwards at Home and Abroad: Historical Memories, Cultural Movements, Global Horizons (2003).

Biblical History in a neat package

An entire library could be written, I suppose, on the subjects of The Holy Bible, it's various commentators and critics, the history of the church with its many branches, and the impact of scripture on various individuals, on culture and whole civilizations. David W. Kling manages to cover this vast subject matter rather neatly, if not exhaustively, in his book The Bible In History.
By focusing on just eight texts (which will be familiar to most readers - even if you have not 'studied' the Bible), and following each of them through various exegeses, from the earliest recorded to modern commentary, Mr. Kling provides a widely sweeping view of the impact of these scriptures on society.
The Bible In History, is, at times a bit dry to read. I see from the other reviews that it is used as a classroom text book, this is no surprise. Some of the information gets very detailed, which would be of benefit to the serious student. The chapters are very structured, which gives the reader the opportunity to 'pick and choose' a bit. For example I found that in certain chapters I read only the earlier commentary. I found that it was handy to have a reference bible handy wile reading, as many passages in the scripture are referred to. I use one on my smart phone, which allows quickly looking up a specific line. I feel that this this added to reading the book.
