Good introduction to note-taking of academic lectures

As an instructor of English for Academic Purposes, I look for lectures that are interesting, of 5-10 minute length, well-organized, authentic, and with high production value. This book and CD/DVD meet most, but not all, of these criteria.
The weak points about the lectures are that they are "canned" - that is, they are memorized speeches delivered by actors in a controlled / artificial setting (actors in a mock classroom). As such, they lack any instructor-student interaction. Further, the instructors do no visual support (writing on board or slide support). The mock student discussion scenes are also scripted and the acting/dialogue is adequate, but sometimes weak.
However, my students don't seem to notice the weak points, and can benefit from the targeted use of academic terms and excellent organization of the speakers. It's not the real world - and that's OK because the real world lectures are too hard, in most cases, due to instructor rambling, poor audio, etc.
This is a good compromise - and a good intro support for EAP listening.

I bought this book for a friend who was taking conversation classes and he enjoyed the book very much. Told me that the front cover page bended in the first days, but I guess this is expected from the type of material of these books. Overall, the content and structure of the book seemed to help him very much to improve his conversation skills.
